When I was in the Navy I was promoted to E-2 immediately and was E-3 by the time I finished my full training, if I had a degree I would have then been promoted to E-4 shortly after my arrival to my first command, but had to wait about six months, so within about a year's time I was an E-4 which is around $30k or more, then when you move off base they give you a fixed amount to spend on rent off base. Then there are all sort of other financial incentives you wouldn't understand because you never served.
