I finally figured out how to explain it to someone who thinks it shouldn’t be possible. Take a dry erase marker and trace the piece of paper on the mirror. Now hold the egg up to the mirror without the paper. As you move around, the reflection of the egg in the mirror will move around on the surface of the mirror, relative to the angle you’re looking at it. So now you can see that from any angle where the reflection appears outside the box you traced you would be able to see the egg even if the paper was there, but any angle that puts the reflection inside the box would not have a visible egg reflection if the paper was there.
