As soon as the merchant elites that run our societies can no longer offer better job deals for their servants, the servants will most likely stop taking the deals and seek the patronage elsewhere. At that point societies will stop functioning. The elites know this and have been preparing for that for a while now, hence all the extreme security and surveillence creep.
