>was this historically accurate or did they add some bullshit?
My whole family laughed at this propaganda shit. From how Russians are portrayed there to the typical stereotypes and utterly stupid distortions of facts (like the helicopter crash, for example). My father was one of the coordinators involved in managing the accident, just like over 10 million other Soviet citizens. The series tries to convey a very particular subtext to Western viewers: the USSR was garbage. Communism is a misanthropic ideology. Meanwhile, in the West, everything is supposedly different - democratic, high-tech, and proper. Which, of course, is a lie, yet for some reason, no one makes series about that in the West. But if someone wanted to make one, here’s a perfect plot for an apocalyptic disaster: a train crash in Ohio in 2023 transporting vinyl chloride. Total media censorship, the silencing of facts about mass poisoning. Everything included.
>>
>>519103349
It's reasonably accurate, as far as western TV adaptations of irl events go. Chernobyl really was a sad fuckup of multiple layers of deferring authority and covering your own ass in a rotten system that was about to collapse on itself within 5 years. It's sort of emblematic of what USSR was in it's last years, just a bunch of middle age yes men rats climbing over each other into political offices hoping to get some before the whole thing goes
>>
>>519103349
It was complete bullshit
Chernobyl wasnt a threat to Europe at all
The physics in the show is fictional
>>
>>519103349
mostly accurate, but "strong wymon" was added bullshit. The retardation of dyatlow and soviet union reluctance to admit catastrophe was shown very accurate
>>
>>519103349

It's about as accurate as you can get in order to cram the whole thing into five 1hr episodes. It has received minor criticisms for accuracy and the depiction of Lyudmilla Ignatenko intentionally putting her unborn baby in harms way by visiting her husband at Hospital 6 is probably the biggest criticism.

It's pretty accurate, obviously some bits are made more titilating for TV. The idea that the reactor could have turned into a thermonuclear bomb has already been discounted by scientists as being unlikely. But they had to home in on something in the series to create intrigue.

But the state responses, providing a robot that was not up to the task of clearing Masha (the radioactive roof), the men risking their lives to hang the soviet flag, all pretty accurate.

I'm amazed it didn't get white washed, maybe turning some of the key heroes into nigs or whatever.

After the official end of the cold war, literally glowing people smuggled enough plutonium to kill millions even by inhalation, from Moscow to Munich, on board a civilian airliner. Official reason was to show off before elections, but who knows what they wanted to do. In any case, it showed that one can obtain doomsday weaponry and fuck around with it like it's play-doh.

>>519103713
Kek. I hope you discussed the melting temperature of steel beams at great length.

>>519104110
> But they had to home in on something in the series to create intrigue
Nicely reddited. They should make it mandatory to have filmmakers bribed by several industries at once, for a more balanced stream of propaganda lies.
>>
>>519103349
>was this historically accurate or did they add some bullshit?

Its pretty accurate. The only bullshit they added in was the Mary Sue woman character who is an amalgam of about three or four different men.

Still a great series 10/10 television. Probably the best show I've seen in the past decade.

Well the only thing that's real is the meltdown, various people in the show and some of the events that happened the entire dialogue is clearly fake I don't know why you'd watch this and treat it as though it's a documentary the main draw would be the acting aka the dialogue which is entirely made up
>>
>>519104347
That detail strikes out you homo?
>>
>>519103349
>did they add some bullshit?
They somewhat overdid it with the drama and also condensed a whole room of greybeard scientists into one extra-smart-woman character that never actually existed.
In their defense, the show isn't a documentary (and gets way more things right than your average "based on real events" shows) and no one wants to spend an hour getting introduced to dozens of scientists who do their parts and leave.

Also the divers from episode 2 or 3 went on to live normal lives afterwards. They did go in expecting to die though, it's just that everyone overestimated the potency of that sludge.

That's all I remember.

I love how these two posts are right next to each other, 1 second apart.

Anyway, I watched it, and it's a good dramatization of events. But they did take creative liberties with what actually happened for the purposes of making a more entertaining show, and the creators of the show even admitted as much in interviews. It does inspire you to look up what actually happened after you watch the show and it's all still quite interesting. Especially in-depth explanations of why the reactor exploded in the first place.

>>
To me it's comparable to Shogun. It's a more mature show than usual, with good atmosphere and good dialogues.
But obviously don't go thinking you're any kind of specialist or knower after watching it, it's nicely wrapped up but it's still Western entertainment. Lots of liberties are taken. Especially for Chernobyl where it involves a fairly recent and very political event that still has propagandish untertext for today's geopolitical game (i.e USSR bad so Russia bad).

If entertainment was a cup of shit, then I'd say it's the kind of show that would float at the top.
>>

I mean obviously they had no choice in the matter and it's a dramatization, but you'd be surprised how prevalent patriotism was in some strat of the soviet society. And miners were like the cream of the proletariat, it is not inconceivable they'd drink the koolaid to some degree.
>>
>>519104647
Lol. Of course, a train derailing in the U.S. carrying hazardous chemicals is just a common occurrence. It’s both ironic and true at the same time. Or maybe because the Ohio disaster isn’t a media-hyped failure of a communist ideological opponent in Western countries. But what could even be compared to Chernobyl? Massive wildfires in California caused by total corruption and incompetence in the California Fire Department? Or some flood with countless victims, where Russia offered its assistance, but the U.S. refused it TO PRESERVE ITS PRESTIGE - just like the USSR in the HBO series - resulting in even more deaths?
>>
>>519105104
>making actors do goofy russian accents to speak english is dumb.
I think I saw in an interview that they did experiment with that for a moment, and then came to the conclusion that it was indeed dumb and goofy-sounding, and made the actors present their characters in exaggerated ways. So, they just went with their natural accents.
>>
>>519105104
I agree. Its too hard to do anything else. Some of these actors are really great and shouldn't have to worry about accents or language.

>>
>>519103541
>shitskins were abused
there were no shitskins in the series
unless you count coal dust covered miners as such
the whole series was generally pretty boring. I don't see the hype apart from a few moments. If they made it 1/3rd length and compiled the best moments of the series it would be pretty good

There's this 1.5 hour long documentary "The Battle of Chernobyl" and it's really good. Way better than the HBO trash
>>
>>519104842
The reactor RBMK-1000 was poisoned with xenon due to stress tests conducted to test the reactor. That's why it blew up. A violation of safety regulations, which could happen anywhere in the world. And not because the USSR tried to save money on the size of the rods. Lol. Lmao, just lol.

Which, to be fair, they mentioned the divers surviving and Illanya being one character from many scientists in the ending montage.

The one thing I noticed was the lie about the bubbler tanks causing an explosion of "2-4MT". That was never going to happen.
That's the only blatant fabrication I picked up on. The rest was pretty solid, the first episode hammed up the radiation acting immediately for drama but the effects were real, just sped up to show the danger which I guess I'm ok with.
>>
>>519105316
Plus it's not simple in other ways, if they go in heads high doing their patriotic duty, and say so, and somehow survive, they'd probably all get "hero of labour medal", flat, car, early retirement at like double the normal rate etc.

The explosion and poisoning threats were as exaggerated as [redacted by 4chan moderation]. Don't know about the animal shooting, would have to look that up. Beyond the propaganda entertainment, I find the long term cancer cases calculations are a bit shoddy. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more than even the greenologists screech about, or a lot less. But the long term uninhabitability is bollocks, if society continues without a doomsday event, cancer is cured this century, so it will become prime real estate again. If you are a zoomer, you might even live to see this.

My personal takeaway from civil fission use is that it was never secured against corruption, stupidity and internal terrorism. And they never really talked about the cumulative global risk. Just like BSL labs and genetic lab supplies today. To me it looks like fusion could have been achieved in the 90s, if it weren't for industrial lobbies. The new methods like PV and wind have lots of problems that are downplayed, the huge distributed maintenance effort and rip-off of homeowners who are locked into it by capital cost is the worst in my opinion. But if done right, you really gain a bit of independence with your mini hydro turbine or PV roof, freedom from the desires of the mentally ill control freaks that run most governments.

2. There was not females protagonist in the events portrayed (it actually makes a disclaimer about this instance of "woke" -- alluding to it being a plot device needed to flesh-out the story).

3. There was not "I WANT THE TROOF / YOU CAINT HANDLE DA TROOF!!" speech decrying the internecine lies and secrecy of the Soviets.

Near the end when Legasov is explaining the process of the runaway reaction. There is a dramatized event of a worker inside the reactor chamber where we get to see the caps ontop of the control rods/fuel rods seemingly jump up and down. Thing is. They've added bullshit. Part of it, because of dramatization, part of it was straight up bullshit.

Like with the firefighters in the hospital. They are not separated because they are radioactive semi-ghouls who can kill babies in the womb. They are separated because their entire immune system is killed by the radiation and will die from any infection.
The whole baby absorbed the radiation was stupid as fuck. Also, from what I've read, the real life Ludmilla wasn't a stupid cunt like in the series. She worked her ass off in the hospital, helping the firemen the hospital staff didn't dare to touch.
The show heavily implied that the political leaders tried to suppress the whole thing, while the scientists were looking for the truth. It was more of a mixed bag from both sides.
Also I'm pretty sure the old party member who suppressed the news and told to cut phone lines was a made up bullshit too.

Wouldn't that be a bit early for an old man to get such a fast cancer? I am no expert in that, but it seems it takes years to decades for most tumors from first cell to symptoms, then months from symptoms to death. But I get there are some blood cancers which are really fast, like weeks, doubling times in hours.

>all the meetings with party officials are complete made up bullshit just to dunk on commies
Covid meetings in the West were way way more retarded, mixture of "how can I milk bribes" and "I can't into high school math, but I run the country". A small percentage of politicians was genuinely interested in solving the crisis, and they got shunned. Only when things were near breaking, they got some attention, but as soon as it got better again, bribes and mouthbreathing was back on the menu.

In Russia, such people are treated compulsorily and free of charge, giving them a second (and third, and even fourth chance for free). Many of them get back on track and return to normal life. In the US, this requires a lot of money, so people die in agony on the streets. During their period of drug use, men and women are subjected to repeated sexual and physical abuse, including while conscious. The result: widespread street schizophrenia and mental disorders, a danger to society. A high level of crime.

How did that cause the explosion? The only sense making explanation I've heard is that the rods were too short and let light water into the channels when fully retracted so when the emergency shutdown was pressed they displaced the light water and caused a spike in local reactivity.
>>
This is a comfy watch
>>
>>519107725
Xenon made the output power low, cause it's a neutron absorber. So they took out all the fuel rods out. That made xenon "evaporate" instantly, suddenly nothing was absorbing the neutrons, all the safety rods were out (which was verbotten anyway) and boom goes the dynamite
>>
>>519104315
No it is not accurate, it is nuclear scare.
Half the numbers they throw around are wrong and the claims of the dangers and what the reactor could do are exaggerations on the several magnitude scale.
Like the claim of what it could do would not even be possible with a 1000 MT bomb.
The reactor explosion was not even a nuclear one, it spread nuclear material, but it was a conventional pressure explosion.
A 10 m by 10 m by 10m cube is a 1000000 liters.
If water gets vaporized it increases its volume by something like 1200 to 1300 times.
That makes over a billion liters.
Imagine water being superheated well beyond 100°C more like 200°C or even more.
Once the pressure vessel broke you have a million liters of super heated water that really doesn't want to be liquid at that point and turn into more than a billion liters of water vapor.
This is a strong explosion, but it is not a nuclear one in its nature.

>>519107915
That's a myth made by people who don't understand nuclear, the rods were part graphite and part absorber, you position the graphite part in the core when you need more power.

>>519107864
That makes absolutely no sense. The burnup rate of xenon 135 is well understood and anyone with training in reactor physics would know what would happen if they tried to power through a poison-out. That's specifically why it's forbidden to restart a reactor without regulator approval once it gets to that point, a shift manager that ordered something like that would get fired immediately.

If that's really what happened then the USSR was truly as shit as people make it out to be here in the west.

>>519108409
>That's a myth made by people who don't understand nuclear, the rods were part graphite and part absorber, you position the graphite part in the core when you need more power.
No it's the general consensus of disaster, even in the USSR. They couldn't insert the control rods without exposing the graphite as that was the first part to enter the reactor.
>>
>>519108509
>was it the case for the retards who operated it?
Yes, it was known about but the RBMK reactors were also known to be large enough there are 'bubbles' of Xenon. So non homogeneous distribution. So another issue is they possibly thought they had successfully burnt it all up. When really it was just sitting deeper in the core.

>muh graphite tips
They were graphite displacers, not tips. The point of them was to displace the water and act as extra moderator when you moved the control rods up and down. That way, the whole control rod assembly acted as both a throttle and a break all in one, effectively giving you more control authority over the reactor.
What happened is that by pressing the RZ button, the "throttle" part of the control rods got inserted all at once in to the bottom of the reactor which was already surging (due to all the control rods being removed in the first place), all at once. That's what caused the accident.
>>

Propaganda. Didn't you get a clue from that episode with muh hecking jews opressed by ebil KGB?
The most glaring is Dyatlov denying the catastrophe, when in fact he knew some bad shit happened from the beginning.
I won't find the video on youtube quickly. But there were surviving workers from NPP in Kiev reviewing it negatively, how distorted the portrayal is. And they wrote a collective complain about movie basically slandering people who were involved in liquidation of catastrophe.
>>
in some ways it's very accurate and in others it's not.

for example, when comrade whatshisface has to go on the roof to look at the reactor, that did actually happen. however, in real life, he wasn't accompanied by a soldier with a gun to make him do it.

the directors say that they added in the soldier because a western audience wouldn't understand, without that soldier being there, why the man would go up to the roof and do something so obviously suicidal. in the soviet system the impossibility of disobeying such an order was understood, but a westerner not existing inside that system wouldn't understand that so they had to put the soldier in as tangible evidence of the soviet system's coerciveness.

is that correct? is it lying? is it inaccurate?

it's good television, anyway.

Dyatlov's book:
>A. Sitnikov, after checking 4th block, where he received a large dose, but not a lethal one, understood that the fourth reactor is completely destroyed. What he reported. He was not on the roof, he did not look at the reactor from above. It is true that he made an attempt to get to the top, but the metal door effectively prevented this action

Medvedev's book:
>He explored the entire reactor block building, then climbed on the roof of the "B" unit and on the roof of the "C" unit from where he looked at the reactor and as a result received a dose of 1,500 R

In Russian, that’s the usual way of politely addressing people - first name + patronymic. You can also do a western “mr. first name” but that’s much less common.
Fun fact: there are no words for mister/miss/missis in Russian. There were during czar, but then the Soviets came and replaced them with “comrade”. And then Soviets left, and “comrade” fell out too, but the czar era words are still considered old-fashioned.

I don't remember all of the details, but the guy in charge is a raging faggot that was mad that boobs were shown on TV, so took it as a personal mission to show dicks in almost every show, as if boobs and dicks are comparable.

Some autists have even counted and found that hbo shows contains more dicks than all vaginas in all of cinematic history, by far.

The only part of the series that is 100% accurate is that RBMK did indeed cheap out on the reactor design, and the KGB 100% did actually know and actively covered it up. I will say this, it did ONLY explode because of the botched safety test. I do wonder how much the American government actually worried about this at the time because we facilitated at least two purposeful reactor meltdowns in the middle of the Nevada desert just to see what might happen.

Midwits fail to realize the irony of the message conveyed in Chernobyl which is too dig deeper to find the truth since it's always ommited for different reasons and in that regards the series was a spectacular accident because if you do your own research you find out things were far more complex and layered, internally and personally, than the series managed to portray since it uses a limited amount of sources as a framework. I remember translating the Legasov tapes and dwelling deeper into the documentation of the nuclear design of the Chernobyl reactor and was astonished to find just how much the series missed and got simplified due to natural limitations that exist in a medium as a tv drama series. I thought the epilogue (investigate, explore, inquire, study) was just a great experience as learning about Chernobyl through this series even if it wasn't an intentional thought from the director.

Good propaganda says the truth
Like for example
Women can
Thats it the whole propaganda

USSR cleaned up that shit within same year
An gigantic giganemorus task of epic proportions is cleaning that huge area roganising both army and civilians its supposed to be celebrated as high as humans landing on moon, but the movie shows it as "the fuckers killed the dogs like even the dogs and puppies"

Compare with Fukushima it is still leaking radioactivity to ocean

>But in westerners minds it was holocauster on animals,
You are both wrong.
In the village cleanup scenes there is a Georgian in the team, that gets bullied a bit for being a Georgian.
The scene sequence shows the teamleader shooting puppeys when his youngling would prefer not to (but is ready to do so when his leader takes over).
He also takes care of him, tells him to protect his balls with lead shielding etc.

Sovietniggers dont like it because it shows a very real, human moment: The georgian randomly reads off a soviet motivational slogan, sth about good things and brothers, and the teamleader looks at him saying "wtf are you talking about" before being reminded that they are literally surrounded by these slogans and pamphlets, but its so disconnected from their reality they forgot.

I always found it interesting that all the positive things (the will of the people to sacrifice themselves for others, the decorated General knowing his measurements will be trusted and doing it himself, showing gray morality in the main character (him being an antisemite but caring about all the lives affected by the catastrophe)) are completely glossed over by Vatnik fans. Makes any serious discussion about what was precise and what was propagandistic impossible. the UK DOES like to shit on Russia in media they produce.

I have not seen this but i can tell you with 110% certainty, they added shit to it in order to steer consensus about what happened.
They ALWAYS do.
They do the same thing now every time something crazy comes up or happens, they immediately put a skit on SNL trying to downplay it and have a new Netflix film out in 6 months to help steer the narrative to control "their" position.
The Kikes in Kontrol do this all the time. Its consensus steering and they do the same with the media and bots on the internet in comment sections.
