Because the president and a press secretary filter information. Witnesses who report inside the Pentagon provide a degree of transparency. Yes, they were curated and selected for how cooperative they'd be with government, how favorable they'll present information, and having them there kept government power in check to a degree. The any administration removing those checks should be cause for concern because it says the level of control they already had isn't good enough for what they want to do.
