It's obviously the same thing. The biggest distinguishing factor in a genuine UFO experience is psychic phenomena. These things react to thoughts and can implant thoughts in your head. That means this isn't strictly a nuts and bolts machine you're seeing in the sky, it has a mental component. The reddit atheist will tell you this means angels are aliens. The way more disturbing idea is that aliens are angels. We have been made to believe that God/Heaven/Hell/Demons/Angels all exist exclusively as non-corporeal things. But what if they have a physical reality? God may be an ineffable entity, but perhaps there is some nucleus that can be touched. Doesn't Jesus have a body? So why not the angels? A consistency in abduction stories: when the abductee invokes the name of Jesus, the experience immediately stops. Are the aliens just being nice, or is there something darker there?

That and the "ufos/paranormal are extra-dimensional intrusions" are probably the two most convincing (to me) theories, with the one you describe being ahead by a length. I have a great book somewhere called "Weird Astronomy: Tales of Unusual, Bizarre, and Other Hard to Explain Observations" by David A.J. Seargent which unexpectedly mentioned (IIRC) that there are frequently electromagnetic phenomena (such as but not limited to static electricity in the air) observed along with UFO and even some (again, IIRC) meteor sightings. The concept that UFOs aren't the 'thing', but merely a symptom of it, is very interesting to me. I feel there may be some electro-geologic connection, and which includes some of the weird-ass observations around Mt Shasta and other places. Roll in the possible concept that consciousness is an effect of micro-tubule structures in the brain and it becomes easier to conceive that the 'noise' from the Earth itself could be flashing static across our consciousness' radio receiver and causing us to experience realities that aren't objectively there.
