Learned helplessness is a psychological term for when a person stops trying to change a negative situation, even when they are able to, because they have learned through past experiences that their actions are futile. This can lead to feelings of powerlessness, low self-esteem, and depression, and was first studied by psychologist Martin Seligman in the 1960s.
