My attitude toward Indians has softened after I went to a Diwali festival at my university last night. We put little candles in small paper boats and sent them into a pond, and the water glowed softly in a nice shade of amber. But more importantly, the girls were nice to talk with, and they were happy. It was a nice time for everyone. People explained things to me and helped me understand the holiday. They didn't exclude me or make me feel unwelcome.

My sense is that Indians have both pride and ethocentrism, which is the reason for nepotistic ethnic preferential hiring. White people used to have this, too, but abandoned it for what can only be retarded reasons. What I don't sense is an eliminationist hatred that I DO get from some groups. Indians have their systems and proud of their own culture. But I never felt as though they wanted me gone or dead.
