the rational argument in support of china and russia as rivals to the west is if you think reform is impossible in the west. And there are strong arguments that reform is impossible in the west. We've seen for decades that it doesn't matter who you elect, you get the same policies. If the electoral process can't bring about reform there is still revolution to try, but i would argue that revolution is also impossible. People point to things like ragheads with ak47s defeating the US in afghanistan, or vietnam as reasons a revolution would work in the US, but i think thats naive. Those were adventures, they weren't existential crises for the american ruling elites. In an existential crises there would be no rules of engagement. Theres that screencap that gets passed around about how you can't police a neighborhood with f-16s, and it implies that the american public with their small arms would overwhelm the government. But you can bomb a neighborhood with f-16s and i think thats what they'd do if they really thought their power was at risk. In a civil war they'd start with war crimes and then they'd invent new ones as it went along. And half the country would cheer them on as they hit rural areas with sarin gas. So the west can't be reformed through elections or violence, which is to say it can't be reformed internally. All that leaves is external forces, and thats why people support russia and china. Its the hope that external pressure can lead to internal reform.
