Your average big box store probably had like 50 staff 10-15 years ago and is now at 1/2 to 2/3 that number because RFID scanning robots and self-checkouts automated the only parts that are really automatable. They have all the analytic tools and ordering/logistics system set up to run automated shops but they've not been able to make the leap for a few key reasons. RFID robots still fuck up all the time so you need some wagies around to count stuff by hand for example or else the store will automatically reorder dozens of unscanned items sitting in the shop warehouse. The other aspect they hadn't counted on is that customers are retards who need to ask wagies to help them choose almost anything, that customers simply don't like shopping in an unstaffed or understaffed store and that shoplift increases by insane amounts if your store is robot manned.
