Fundamentally it was caused by a few different things that predate the 2016 presidential election. First and foremost, price increases are generally prices increasing and wages remaining stagnant. The 1968 Immigration act allowing dregs of third worlders to emigrate into the US increasing labor supply and due to generally no cultural connections to the white US citizens, they were much less likely to join in unions and were willing to work for lower wages resulting in wages becoming stagnant while prices of good increased. Second, the factory labor which most unions were prior tended to be offshored to Asia during the period from 1960-2000 so no more unions for industries that no longer existed in the US. Third, the rampant spending of LBJ in Vietnam leading to severe problems with the US budget and Nixon abandoning the gold standard led to a period of rampant inflation.
