Pull up Google maps and see what the speed limits are on these paltry little FM roads (Farm-to-Market roads). You can get anywhere you want to go in the “empty” places infinitely easier than using your upgraded ox cart paths that you are still using in Europe. Fun fact: look at the Google maps of West Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota — the “Great Plains.” Check out how the roads are laid out running perfectly north-to-south and east-to-west on a one-mile grid. But look closer. Every so often, the road will take a big, sweeping 90-degree turn to the left and then a few hundred yards further down, you have another one back to the right. If I gave you a year to think about why these are there, you would still not guess. So I’ll tell you. In order to keep the roads on a constant one-mile spacing, they have to add these little jiggles, in order to account for the curvature of the earth. That’s how featureless it is out there. And yes, it’s round.
