I thought this was just a retailer and streaming service provider, apparently they were controlling the entire internet behind the scenes? the fuck?

Seems about right

It's hosting/supply chain/backend solutions, not full internet control
it just so happens that theirs is the best at most forms of complex storefront management, AKA how Amazon itself runs
>>
>>519425022
they are a major datacenter and cloud provider
so they have uplinks to backbones across the world
some of our biggest banks run through them

You think Prime Days are because they're swell retailers who want you to have everything you want and spend very little to get it? It's to test their massive server infrastructure while selling at giveaway prices the shackles that chain you to their information systems and enslave you to their bread and circuses.
>>
>>519425162
Yep. I have a feeling the majority of Tor nodes are still run on AWS. sorta defeats the purpose, no?
Only plebs use Tor without a private relay.
Seems tons of bots on here are powered by AWS.

The myth of the rugged individual in America is just that- a myth. They want to be told what to do, how to do it, and get paid for following orders. And have a state religion. And have a centrally planned economy. Just don't call it that, pretend this is all the "invisible hand" of the market rather than the very visible hand of the people in charge.

AWS *is* Amazon. It drives far more revenue than online shopping. By the way, it probably wasn't a jeet that poisoned the DNS cache. Amazon very recently fired 40% of the DevOps crew because they developed "self-healing and provisioning" AI. Oops.

Today's issue was jack shit compared to the "mirai botnet" of 2016. I worked at the dns company that was targeted (dyn, manchester, NH) and it majorly disrupted amazon (yes even aws themselves had dyn doing dns for them), ebay, facebook, etc. etc. etc. It was kinda hilarious because the place was staffed by the biggest nerd, neckbeard types you've ever seen, and on that day, they were all ree'ing and shidding and farting and doing autistic screechfests after years of being basically non-verbal. Yea idk.

I have known for a while because I was part of a free training course for it here, and what I also learned is that they hire a ton of third worlders like me, mainly indians, who indirectly manage a large part of the internet because of it. AWS uses indians for everything, even when taking my exam for the first certification they told me not to take it online because I would have to stare at an Indian for a whole hour straight with no breaks and it would be awkward.

No, a handful of massive data centres that you can rent some of is just a lot cheaper than running a server farm in your own office.

Almost every single company (small-medium-large) got rid of their on premises web servers and fell for the "cloud" meme (ie renting servers from Amazons server farms). Management just loves shit with a good marketing spin on it.

>apparently they were controlling the entire internet behind the scenes? the fuck?
AWS is Amazon's premier revenue generator. Their retail division is insubstantial but the most public facing.

The reason why they're so dominant is because the companies and organizations that use AWS no longer have to worry about hosting, security, etc. AWS handles all of the hard work and it turns out that specializing in that pays big bucks.

AWS also just has so much server capacity that they don't really suffer a great deal by tossing a ton of money into AI development or even just hosting it.

These are the consequences of the US refusing to enforce its own antitrust laws, and letting a handful of companies gain effective monopolies on the internet. The digital infrastructure of our nation can be boiled down to a handful of companies, and even essential government programs are now increasingly beholden to them.

We are approaching, and may have already reached, the point where a private company can hold the US government hostage on policy because if they turn off their servers the government ceases to function. In the past this would never have happened, the government would have created their own infrastructure for government use to remain independent. But for "some reason" our politicians have decided to join us at the hip to billionaires and leave us incredibly vulnerable.

This is like if, during the cold war, we had let a private company privatize our nuclear facilities and we could only order a missile launch as long as we maintained our contract with them and they chose to follow our orders when the time came. Not a single member of the US military anywhere within 5 miles of our own nukes.

Spoken like a true tech support pajeet with zero knowledge of the real world. Every major company operates cloud services these days, and there are only a few companies that are able to provide them in the scale that's needed. There are way too many advantages that cloud services provide compared to on-prem servers. AWS going down will effect every company using AWS in some form, which is a lot.

The billionaires own the government, not the other way around. The CIA may have a lot of influence and be up to shady shit, but if the DoD was calling the shots do you really think they would have installed a president that hates the military and continuously disrespects them and pisses them off?

The tech bros paid for the president and got a president that has been very good for them, cutting taxes and regulations on them left and right. When Trump leaves office, the tech industry will remain holding all of the free shit he gave them and have dominance for the foreseeable future.
CIA and DoD haven't gotten shit from Trump. If you think they are calling the shots on this, your political awareness begins and ends with reruns of the X-Files.

Trump is NSA backed, money buys influence not power. The NRO is why the tech bros have their influence, not a shred of power resides outside of the government, not even the FED works without the 16th amendment. You are referring to American government catering to Oligarchs over Corporations (as they have the last 50 years). Oligarchs can weather tariffs and thrive in volatility. Precise opposite of what your billionaire corporations want. Dems are for corporations, Rs are for Oligarchs. That is the power dynamic the US gov is managing

It's the competency crisis coming back to hit them. Amazon has laid off a fuckload of people these past few years and forced a lot out with RTO policies. So when issues like this happen, the visajeets that were hired to replace the actually good people don't know what they were doing and you have embarrassing half-a-day outages instead of just a few minutes of service disruption.
>>
>>519446401
In terms of cloud providers, Azure is #2. GCP is a distant 3rd. AWS is by far the biggest though.
