I traced my family lives going back to the first person on American soil. Basically all of them entered through cities like New York and Philadelphia but almost none of them stayed long. They spread across the Mid-Atlantic and Rust Belt settling in smaller cities for the most part. This is pretty typical for American settlers and immigrants from Europe apparently. New York and Philadelphia were dominated by a WASP overclass until after the Gilded Age and the people not from this class who stayed were the riff raff and really cloistered into ethnic communities. Americans who weren’t lawyers but didn’t have no skills at all and could learn English went to the Pennsylvania coal barrens, and the New York transport hubs, and the cheap properties in Ohio and Virginia.

Living anywhere but Manhattan is essentially giving up. Even moreso if you are white male.
