He's used to being able to hide behind America's skirts, but even amongst the younger generation of American Jews Israel is losing popularity, so that may not be an option for much longer. Israel's actions over the last two years have created a huge amount of anti-Israel sentiment, and I don't think Netanyahu is really aware of the scale of this or has factored in how this will affect Israel in the long term.
