Half the reason is it decreased the desire to make new people when you have a seemingly endless amount you could talk to online. But there's so many benefits that society could gain by simply cutting all consumer internet access. Thered be people in the streets at first wandering around like zombies unable to cope with the extra 8-12 hours of free time they have. Suzie lost her Instagoy following, Timmy can't game online, Ellen can't doom scroll Faceberg for 12 hours any more, etc.
