Basically, as soon as cars were available, most people who could afford to, chose to drive in the USA. There were exceptions. Major dense cities that had Elevated or subway lines tended to have a decent number of riders from even better off demographics, and actual train lines bringing people into a city center from suburbs that had a train line still had well iff suburbanites coming into the cities on public transit. The problem was, most of the public transit was run by private corporations, and when automobiles became affirdable, it killed off the public transit profit margins, so most of the public transit companies started going broke, and started cutting costs, and maintenance and reliability went down, creating a downward spiral of performance. This in turn meant even less better off people took public transit, leaving the transit to poor people, and weirdos who don’t drive. Public government then had to take over the transit, and that kept it running to an extent, but didn’t fix most of the issues. Most public transit is slower than driving, to the extent that it takes 2-4x as long to get anywhere, so anybody who values their time, also avoids it.Jonathan English did an article for Bloomberg spelling out the issues and history.
