According to the Military Times, the discount is about 24% at supermarkets for military families.>As the troops are dealing with outdated military buildings and systems across the region, Military Times reports the Department of War is preparing to sell — as is — 178 commissaries in the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico to investors and grocery store chains.>10 On Your Side is looking into reports that commissary operators have told military families to stock up as soon as possible.>Thursday, 10 On Your Side spoke to a commissary employee, who was unaware of the privatization talks, but told us some families are buying more than normal.>Military Times reports the Pentagon issued a memo this spring that instructs departments to privatize functions such as retail.>According to Military Times, the maintenance backlog alone for the nation’s commissaries rings up at $2.4 billion.>10 On Your Side reached out the the Pentagon Thursday morning; so far no response.
