Tariffs are killing their auto industry. Hundreds of thousands of jobs lost and increasing every week.
They're paying for it hard.

Did anyone ever seriously believe he'd reduce the tariffs?

If Canada's auto industry dies then there is no reason to put tariffs on Chinese EVs which means they have an entry point in NA markets which will eventually kill the entire NA Auto Industry.

you know he's right, that's what all analysts are saying, everyone knows Reagan was a free trader.

This doesn't mean he didn't set some tariffs, like Biden did, just not sweeping high general tariffs against the entire planet.

Edited? It was posted by the Reagan library 8 years ago. Did someone time machine back? Trump's tariff policy is terrible on every level.
https://youtu.be/5t5QK03KXPc?si=uHFwQC9noMgtrCm7

"You see, at first, when someone says, ``Let's impose tariffs on foreign imports,'' it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works -- but only for a short time. What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs." - Reagan

>>
>>519808017

At worst they can be fucking over some canadians, and only as much as they fuck over americans who buy from them.

Due to each country's size they are relatively worse for canadians, sure. But it's not like it's a tax that he makes "canada" pay and has no other consequences lmao that's a giga low IQ take.

Trump is very smart for playing patriotism in a way that he can increase taxes and make it look like a good thing, ngl

Listen to the address. Reagan said that tariffs and protectionism bad, but in certain exceptional cases it is the lesser of two evils like giving an enemy total control of a supply we need. The speech is specifically selling the idea "tariffs bad" because his business buddies wanted to be able to use sweatshop labor overseas.

Our government, especially Ford, seems to think we have a right to the American market, but that’s not how it works. It’s an entitled attitude reminiscent of a purple haired land whale and reflective of Dougie’s limited intellectual capacity. It’s also reflective of our government as a whole and the stagnant economy they’ve fostered over the last decade. Instead of maximizing domestic industry health, production and innovation, they just try and ride America’s coat tails, score useless political points to parade around their inner circle and the for the socialist mouth breathers, all while importing an insane amount of undereducated and relatively uncivilized foreigners to try and prop up the economic numbers.

Tl;dr they’re fucking retards.

Tariffs are trade barriers. Candian exports are becoming less competitve and being pushed ouf of American market due to import levies. That shit is very destructive to the exporting country who mostly rely on the consumer base of it neighbor. It’s like a gacha game without the Japanese market.
>>

>Trump's tariff policy is terrible on every level.
You really are a dumb. How long do you think you can continue printing money ? Each year that passes makes it even more difficult to recover, your jobs, your ingenuity your drive and initiative is being given away. The only people getting ahead nowadays are the super rich and the third world you were letting into the country. Thank God Trump realizes the problem. He literally is your only hope to stop you dissolving into a South American shithole.
From which you probably come.

Trumps tariffs will be your last attempt to correct the balance of payments problems by forcing idiots like you to buy fewer items that are completely unnecessary - that latest Samsung OLED TV. Your type would sell your own mother and nation down the fucking river to make sure cheap Chinese trinkets from Amazon keep on coming in.

And why the fuck should the US ( that’s you, idiot) give Canadians sheltered employment in Auto Plants? None of the Auto plants are Canadian anyway. I mean who are you trying to kid? Canada is completely dependent on the US for its ever dwindling economy. Made dwindling by their own Government. You are much better off having your own auto plants in your own country. Why are we still married?

A majority of Americans voters (not you fucknut) had a visceral intelligence that recognized the world is a dangerous and uncomfortable place. Our world of living in peace and harmony, where everyone can use their correct pronouns is simply a fragile bubble floating on the boiling ocean of envy.

Arrogance makes us Canadians think we are immune to such eventualities. Canada, in reality, is a small strip of land and people clinging desperately and parasitically to the US border, feeding on US blood while mocking them. We are already fucked. And Orange man rhetoric is just a handy excuse for us to blame our fuckups upon. You, on the other hand, might, just *might* recover.

Which is what Reagan actually said. He said the only exception is that tariffs can be used as leverage to deal with countries that are violating the rules and breaking trade agreements. Tariffs have revealed just how bad the midwit problem really is globally. None of you really knew shit about tariffs before Trump implemented them and then you received your programming from Democrat media journalists. Here is a fact: in general, foreign countries end up paying for American tarriffs. That’s through a relatively complicated series of price constraints that exist across different commodities. Sometimes we pay the tariff but when we do we stimulate domestic production and renegotiate trade anyway. We literally can’t lose and you end up paying, cucks.

If the US leaves, if the US starts treating its """allies""" like enemies in a global trade war of everybody against everybody else, then China will find a way to put its foot in the door.
And, I mean, he could do that with Europe, since it is an ocean away. But Canada? The Monroe Doctrine should apply to North America as well as South America. And Trump clearly believes in the Monroe Doctrine since he is waging war against Venezuela and Colombia in order to keep them under his heel (using drug cartels as the convenient excuse).

Antagonizing Canada too much is a bit of a risk. Trump may just find himself with a Chinese colony north of the border if he leaves the Canadians to their own devices.

I mean, what's even the incentive? Why shouldn't the Canadians go all in on China if the US is gonna treat them like shit anyway? Fuck NATO, I'd just invite the Chinese to build their own military bases on Canadian soil simply to spite Trump and his MAGA mafia.

>In the 2019 fiscal year, the federal budget records $2.7 billion in “pollution pricing,” rising to $12.7 billion for the most recent fiscal year. Although a large portion of that was returned to Canadians in the form of rebates, the total collected over the length of the program comes to $44.9 billion.

>Canada will cease to be a sovereign nation in your lifetime
Canada is already gone. That poor bastard is too dumb to see it. Canadians think themselves as more civilized, more refined, more polite, and more sophisticated than you. A species of human evolved to a higher level of civilization. We carry ourselves with pride, verging on arrogance, congratulating ourselves on how we evolved beyond base, crude violence exemplified by our American neighbors.

Canadians characterized Americans like this because thats how we needed them to be, for the sake of our own egos. We told ourselves that it didn't matter that if Americans were wealthier, more powerful, more vigorous, more relevant to the state of the world, because they were brutish orcs compared to our sophisticated selves. Well yes, 80% of our exports do go there, but that didnt matter, we could easily find alternate markets – lets antagonize them – they will never do anything.

We will hold hands, sing Kumbaya. The post national world will love us, as they should. Money? Pah, grows on trees - its to be spent. We don’t need gold – sell it all off. We don’t need polluting industries, close them down. We don’t need fertilizer!! cut its production. We can always buy more food from the US. All resource development has been arrested and made almost impossible to invest in. Oil?? Ewwww who the fuck needs that? Stop all pipelines. Limit natural gas exports. But don’t build any more hydros, ooh its the fish, oooh the first nations, suffering in their mythical graves.

Our defense force is riddled with DEI hires, our industry left in tatters. All people of the post national world will unite in a post national orgasm and cum together, work together and love each other.

Even our beloved Blue Jays are all Americans. Yet here are cheering for an American team pretending its "ours". Like our Auto industry. Our everything. What a bunch of fuckwits we are.

And now. We can do. Nothing.

Tariffs should be used strategically, and I don't think there is any benefit to doing it on Canada. They have very little that we want to reshore.

The most important reason not to do this is that Canada is uniquely dependent on trading with the United States. If we put 500% tariffs on all their goods tomorrow, Canada will collapse. They are already dropping from first world status. They have the earning power of a Mississippi resident, with the cost of living of a Californian resident. We don't have that power over any other country.

If we went through with collapsing Canada, all the fucking Indians they imported are hiking over the border into WA, ID, MT, ND, MN, WI, MI, NY, VT, NH and ME. WE DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. It doesn't make sense.

Donald Trump is the biggest socialist on the planet.
He loves socialism for the rich.
He is completely anti-capitalism. He is against free-market capitalism, at the very least.
He is propping up Intel like Joe Biden did. He is "picking winners" instead of letting inefficient firms fail, as they naturally should under capitalism. It's dirigiste industrial policy.
He wanted a cut of the profits from Nvidia for allowing it to sell computer chips to China (the Chinese don't want them anymore anyway).
This is crony capitalism, which does not lead to prosperity.
Can't we have honest capitalism instead?

to be fair i think a lot of the issue was american libtards gassing up canadians even harder on these same things while your leaders did nothing to address the rot.

If they acted 20, 15 even 10 years ago, this wouldn't have to be an existential crisis. But they didn't, so it is. Ontario's trans-border supply chain industrial sector is going to be utterly crushed and the solvency of the state will lean even harder on western resource extraction. Eventually even the most indoctrinated Canadians will see the country for the farce that it is, with Canada now adopting a h1jeet style visa that will basically legalize the massive fake student migration as a semi-permanent white collar coolie caste.

What domestic real production?
He forced TSMC to open factories in the US but the Taiwanese complained that all the spics they gave them as workers were lazy as fuck and would show up drunk for work (if they showed up at all).
He has got like one (1) company mining rare earths in California. Good luck competing with China on that front!

And US consumers will not benefit from this mercantilism. US consumers will pay higher prices for the same products, or for lower-quality alternatives.
While it may be argued that this is necessary for national security in order to avoid dependence on potentially hostile foreign countries, most voters will definitely not be happy. Many, many people are already turning on Trump. Because they are selfish consumers and do not care about your autarkic dreams.

Chinese EVs are unironically better than US ones.
The batteries in US EVs are mostly made in China or with Chinese parts.
I actually think the US should allow investment from China but only on the same terms, 99 year lease and US government owns 51%
consumer light vehicles aren't really a strategic sector and the US/Europe/Japan still pretty much dominate combustion/jet engine technology which is what we use for military vehicles.

Trump will likely be a blip.
Unless he gets a third-term in office, once he is gone the US will presumably return to less protectionist policies. Egotistical consumers have a right to vote; they will use that right to roll back Trump's policies once the economic pain from protectionism becomes too obvious to endure.
And if Trumpism does survive Trump, the US will stop being a global hegemon; it will retrench to the western hemisphere while China takes over the rest of the world. If China dominates Afroeurasia, it becomes the next global superpower. American retrenchment is basically an admission of defeat. China will rule the rest of the world while the US remains in its containment hemisphere, like a dunce in his corner.

However, Europe will be more hurt than they realize. In many ways, Europe has lived off the largesse of American hegemony in terms of military spending and in favorable trade deals put in place due to Cold War politics (Trumpers like Buchanan exaggerate how much these trade deals are in EU's favor, although they are definitely in EU's favor). Yet, the EU acts like they are doing us a huge favor and threaten to go to China after asking to move towards a more equitable system.

If you suggest they live off our largesse, which is true, they go ballistic. In their minds, they are merely tolerating us.

The EU is like a kid giving the middle finger to a well-providing, but sometimes too controlling, parent, and the child threatens to go live with the rapist down the street if the parent doesn't the child better than we already are.

Every single American with whom I talk on here doesn't seem to understand the kind of geopolitical leverage the US was getting from the EU in exchange of giving the EU free defense and favorable trade deals.
The Americans used their military bases in Italy to bomb Serbia. Having a military presence in Europe allows the Americans to control the Mediterranean Sea and to coddle their Greatest Ally in the Middle East more closely.

If and when the EU gets sick and tired of American bullying and the Yankees are kicked out (or better yet if the Yankees leave the old world out of their own will), the US will lose important forward bases to use against Russia. And of course MAGAtards will scoff because "Europe is irrelevant" is a well-loved mantra in the US and elsewhere around the world, but a Russo-German alliance (either through a Russian military annexation of Germany or through a more friendly alliance) is something that the US always feared, since the early postwar era. Which is why Joe Biden was hell-bent on destroying Nord Stream (he literally said he would destroy it, and then he did it), in order to force Germany to cut ties with Russia. It would not be an exaggeration to say that one of the objective of the Ukraine war was to drive a wedge between Germany and Russia, and that objective has been achieved for now, which is why the US started this proxy war in the first place. Germany may be a country in decline but it is still a remarkable industrial power, and an alliance with resource-rich Russia would be a headache for the US.

But I digress, since the US has already managed to push China and Russia closer together (and even antagonized India a bit), so an even worse nightmare may materialize if the Sino-Russian alliance grows stronger. Europe may be irrelevant after all, but that's a moot point when the US is making enemies out of everyone on the globe, not just out of Europe.

I don't disagree that America gets a lot from it, and will lose a lot if Europe leaves our sphere.

What we can't stand is how much vitrol is directed our way as if you guys aren't massively benefitting as well. You guys constantly act like you are doing us a huge favor, when it is quid pro quo, and in some instances you may come out ahead. You keep on threatening to move closer to China. But I can tell you now that the grass isn't greener on that side. To even threaten that shows that they don't realize how much they are benefitting from the current setup along with us.

We obviously should have pursued friendlier Russian relations to isolate China, but Eastern Europe would have raised hell over that. Not to say that our own elites didn't stupidly refuse to go that direction either.

>>519816413
>We obviously should have pursued friendlier Russian relations to isolate China, but Eastern Europe would have raised hell over that
Why should that have mattered?
A lot of Eastern Europe was already in NATO.
There was no need to say, "We will expand NATO all the way to Ukraine and Georgia!" back in the year 2008.
And in the year 2022, just before the invasion of Ukraine began, the US kept repeating: "Russia does not have a veto power on NATO expansion! Ukraine is free to choose its own military alliances!"
But somehow Cuba was not free to choose its own military alliances with Russia back in the 1960s. Somehow the US had a veto power over Cuba's decisions.
American hypocrisy is just ridiculous.

And anti-American sentiment in Europe is driven by the way in which the Americans have been treating the Europeans. There was Gladio in Italy; the CIA helped far-right terrorists kill civilians in order to blame far-left terrorists in false-flag attacks and weaken the popularity of the Italian Communist Party. Nobody has forgotten that, not in Italy at least. Greece had it even worse.
The US is knee-deep in a lot of shady business in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. And that's the reason many people don't like the US, because they think the US acts in very criminal ways abroad.

And Trump is making Europeans even more furious. Europe is not allowed an independent foreign policy; the EU must do what the US say; but somehow Trump don't want to give Europe anything in return. He says Europeans are free riders and should pay for their own defense. Okay, then fuck off out of Europe. The Russians or the Chinese will fill the vacuum. The grass may not be greener on the other side, but someone may be willing to switch sides simply out of spite sooner or later. And is it green on this side? If Trump Vance treat Europe with constant contempt and disrespect, they ask Europe to pay for its own defense, they try to impose trade deals unfavorable to the EU then what's the point

Honestly some parts of this post are pretty based but I’m still super wary on the tariffs.
Trump’s idea of bringing more manufacturing back to the U.S. + encouraging more people to buy local seems a difficult and very long-term project, one that might require decades and could easily be reversed by a next president who gets in, and ALSO has been made difficult by the decades BEFORE this where America + Western allies’ political and financial elites have worked for the opposite, outsourcing American manufacturing to China and generally promoting offshoring. That’s a pretty hard trend to reverse in just a couple years with some tariffs, almost like reversing entropy, or like how it’s harder to get the spilled milk back in the carton than it is to spill it, if that makes sense.

Ultimate goal would be a good one if possible - bring more manufacturing back to America, support local American industries more generally
Way it’s being attempted - does not seem ultimately helpful and is more like throwing a wrench into the economy + passing more expenses onto the American consumer(s) anyway who will almost inevitably still have to buy various things from overseas/or that are imported

I remember you fucking idiots saying America will be isolated from the rest of the world any day now because Trump brought back America to a tariff-based economy. You idiots don't know America has economic leverage due to the buying power of their 300 million population, and every business from all around the world wants to get a share of that. Trump realized this in his second term and became more aggressive to get what he wants. Literally only China and Canada retaliated, and the rest of us fell in line. It's fucking laughable Canada thinks they're hot shit when your economy relies on Americans buying products from your frozen Pajeet shithole. No matter how much you try to diversify trade, you will get fucked from shipping costs it won't be enough to replace America's market, which you share a border with, that Trump cut off.
>>
>>519812855
>he is trying to tell Americans that Canada is going to pay 10% more on the tariffs, which is incorrect.
he isn't saying that at all, that is just how you interpret how everyone else intetprets it, and you're not wrong in thinking that most americans have no clue
>>
>>519817851
Tariffs don't make economic sense no matter how Trumpian ideologues try to cook them.
They only make military sense if you are a paranoid warmonger who antagonizes the rest of the world.
Economic interdependence is probably a good incentive for peace; only a hostile lunatic who changes the "Department of Defense" back to "Department of War" would want to reduce interdependence because he is obviously planning a major war.
And the US will go from producing hi-tech stuff to just making expensive toasts and other trivial gadgets in order to give jobs to some uneducated people who clearly should just be trained to perform jobs involving a higher added value or put on welfare if they are too stupid to do that. And yes, welfare would probably be less expensive than giving out artificially-created factory jobs that could be done for cheaper overseas.

It wasn't out of context.
Reagan was acknowledging his beliefs that blanket tariffs are bad before moving on to explain why his very targeted and temporary tariff against Japan to deal with a specific issue was necessary.
Trump has blanket tariffs against every country in the world right now with no plans to ever remove them. Reagan was against that.
