Even if they were to cost 100 grand, consider the time it takes for a young man to be old enough to serve, to then train and that if they're white at least, they will have had an opportunity cost of way more than the 100 grand (over their lifetime of paying taxes, one less person to be employed). I can easily see these things being involved in things like logistics near the front (lifting boxes or gear). And yes, the drones that cost a few hundred will be taking those out but it's going to reduce the cost of them losing actual people doing the same work. I can easily see things like hacking/cyber security becoming very important too, you don't want these things getting hacked to turn on humans or start to sabotage etc.
