It was originally sold as economic trading block, which madea a lot of sense and was briefly the world's largest economy. However the real plan had always been to create a United States of Europe, with individual nations' sovereignty being stripped. The more brazen and unashamed they became about that the more unpopular the idea became and with the UK leaving (25% of the EU economy, its connection to the Anglosphere, and a bulk of its military) the EU is all but dead.

Also, Russia and america are entirely different entities now. In the past, russia really was economically destroyed, incompetent and dirt poor. Today they outproduce the entire block in most strategic sectors and even technology. Europe doesn't even have their own search engine, AI, datastorage, modern fighter jet etc etc. Russian and chinese stuff may be worse/stolen when compared to the US, but at least they have their own stuff.Finally resources and industry. Europe systematically destroyed its industry and even sold all major ports to china. They're hopelessly dependent of foreign oil and gas for their industry. And without russian resources, they're de-industrializing even faster now. That's why they bent the knee and signed whatever Trump demanded.Will it collapse? Maybe not. Cause outside the EU, most countries there are even more fucked. But it is in an economic death spiral, and one way or another something on the continent will break. You can't operate managed decline and rest on the laurels of past centuries forever.
