Maria hit Puerto Rico years ago and it literally ruined all of my plans, unironically ruined my fucking life and I'm still suffering the effects of it today, so is our shitty power grid. a fun fact about new orleans is in the city proper and everything in the metro except some parts of the northshore is that the uber rich who live in those granite and marble mansions uptown are the only natives who somehow still have southern accents. they're literally descendants from the first English-speaking people who migrated to the city after the Louisiana Purchase. They were wealthy planters and merchants. Generations later, they still sound the same.

Notice how the wind speed drops as the dropsonde nears the surface. That's due to drag from the ocean waves, which won't matter at all to someone with a house on a hill facing the ocean. Not that it should make much difference if a 130kt vs a 140kt wind hits your house but I've seen first hand during Ike there are a ton of retards who live by "if it's not a 5 I'll still be alive" and many of them aren't. Picrel is "category 2" damage. Killed a ton of people who didn't take it seriously.

It was some time later once power and internet had been restored that I went and checked, and the records indicated it was only 150 mph and cat 4. I don't know what changed because it had been cat 5.
