Most people on /pol/ are Americans who are victims of being surrounded by complete car-centric infrastructure with barely any traffic-calming measures built into the design of said infrastructure.

A lot of places in America do not even have sidewalks let alone dedicated bicycle paths and roads. I do not blame them at all for sticking to 4 wheeled vehicles instead of 2.

I have a motorcycle. My insurance is $15 a month and I spend like $5 on gas every 7 days. It's also a dual sport, dirt bike so I can just ride wherever I want. I once drove 70 miles riding across an interstate on the grass alongside it. Because I discovered most truckers are murder jeets and I didn't want to deal with getting splattered on my 200cc

In all fairness expansion and settlement on this continent kicked off side by side with the industrial revolution, so the automobile just naturally played into the design a lot. Europe is many many centuries older and saw urban development in the era of horses and buggies and walking.

My piece of shit car isn't that expensive to maintain, and the level of freedom it affords me is definitely worth it.
I pay around 300 euroshekels for my yearly insurance (could negotiate it for less but I keep forgetting to) and it doesn't cost that much in gas.

If anything I'm looking to get a newer one soon.

Whenever you see a European bragging about not "needing" a car, you can rest 100% assured it is cope.

Most of these specimens (specially Scandinavians) live in nanny state countries where the government has made car ownership very unaffordable on purpose.
(They themselves brag about how smart and forward-thinking they are for it)

This is done so the government can indirectly control where you can or can't go when designing public transport routes.
Having a car significantly increases your personal freedom and independence for a very low cost.
You can explore and go to plenty of places outside bus routes at your own leisure. You can shop further away for groceries, etc.

This freedom however is very hard to attain for these people that are confined to their cities, bound to the land like a medieval peasant.

Motorcyclist here, genuine question.
What's the point of expensive road bikes when you can get the same performance with an e-bike? Is there a significantly different feeling with the lower weight? From my end it looks like they're both accomplishing the same purpose of higher speed for less effort.

I like to keep an old junk bike for riding around, too. Pick one up for free on Facebook marketplace, take an angle grinder with a wire brush to the headset and bottom bracket, derust or replace the bearings, chuck in some boat trailer marine grease and you've got a nice riding bike that you can leave leaned against a wall outside and nobody bothers stealing.

>significantly different feeling with a lower weight?
Let's say you're 100kg / 220lbs and your bicycle weighs a typical 23kg / 50lbs.
That's a mass of 123kg / 270lbs to pedal with your legs.
Now let's say your bicycle is a neat light 17kg / 38lbs.
That's a weight reduction of 5% but can be enough to make your acceleration off the red light more easy to control.
But now let's say you're not a tall guy and you only weigh 80kg / 176lbs. With the bicycle that's 226lbs total mass to push, and your legs when trained will be just as powerful. Now it's a 17% weight reduction relative to the 270lbs big man ride, same horsepower. You'll fly off the line.
But that's a normal bike. It's 20% weight off with the fancy touring bicycle.

E-bikes by comparison are fairly heavy to ride. They absolutely require the battery and the motor to be ridden normally, but that's normal by normal casual 11mph cyclist standards.
If you commute by bicycle, you're gonna do 15mph comfortably without sweating in no time. I didn't pull a sweat whatsoever after 30 minutes on the bicycle in Amsterdam, but I rode every day. You can do 18mph if you don't mind sweat. 20 if you try.
E-bikes are limited to 15,5mph. You can get faster ones here but then you need a moped license, a helmet and a plate.

Know the best part about the midwest? We have an incredibly low homeless population. Not just because our economy is great so only truly mentally ill people cannot find employment. It is because you will quite literally fucking die if you do not have reliable shelter. -30 is not just some random asspull number. It is the running average in the middle of winter. So no. Thinking about moving back to a rural area outside of Kansas City just to escape the hordes of Florida homeless crackheads and browns. Took a job there when I was 18 and left Florida. All I did was hunt, fish ride dirt bikes and mess around with country girls. Not sure why I ever moved back to this boiling-hot hellhole of a state. Studded winter tires, the same as on a car. On one bike I just had one winter tire and one summer tire and never changed them. works fine. Also -30 isn't slippery at all, it's the around 0 or just below where the studs are needed. You could ride around on summer tires in -30 but not in -2. Well you can but you have to be a bit careful. I've slipped and fell on the bike not 'many' times but every now and then, it's not so bad. I've worn a helmet but never hit my head if I've fallen, but scratched my knees, hands etc.

actually our -30 is colder than USA -30. because in north america they precalculate the effect of wind on temperature, whilst over here they just report the air temp outright. We have to add wind in ourselves so a -30 might feel like -40 here. When americans get the weather report and they say it's -30 their air temperature might be like -20.

>>520086131
No we don't.. we report actual temp and what you're talking about is generally referred to as the "feels like" temp. Typically both are reported, with the "feels like" temp being secondary and smaller, but never the "feels like" temp by itself. Also goes by "real feel" and other monikers.. but that's not what anyone goes by and that's not what is reported by meteorologists..

I mean, I've only lived in Florida and Kansas.. and have experienced multiple tornados and hurricanes that caused extensive widespread property damage.. but yeah, the American news media loves to try to whip us up into a frenzy whenever they can over any given issue. At least with weather reporting there actually usually is some degree of real danger. Here's an oak tree that came down last year that blocked my street until all the neighborhood rednecks all went out with chainsaws instead of waiting for the municipal workers to show up.

These bicycles were made to last for lifetime. Gear chain cover, bagage rack, up straight riding position. Handlebars for natural hand position, not pronated to cause you medial or lateral epicondilitis. Those bycycles were madenfor daily use, for transpoetation. The best thing.
To bad they no longer make bicycles and motorcycles with such cover.
This is the best.
>>
>>520082699
This is the way. Nothing better than these old "POS" bikes. Just like old trucks, "shitbox" type cars predating electronics etc were once derided but are now recognized as being actually pretty great the same thing will happen to these bikes. I like what can still be had pretty cheaply but one day won't be. A solid frame without suspension parts to wear out, built not for performance but to withstand abuse by rural poorfags. Slap a SA 3 speed hub and a hub dynamo on it, some LED lights and you're pretty much done. Want to be extra fancy, have it galvanized, then powder coated and put some clearcoat on top, polish it up and you get a finish that looks like paint that's just starting to fade but won't ever get worse. Gun restorers do that to fake the look of bluing while being more durable. Other than tires, brake pads and a diode every once in a while you can put a lid on it, almost maintenance free. Slow, sure, but there is a use profile for this kibd of stuff. Boomers are starting to die, might be a good time to grab a few bikes like that before they're all gone. In any economic collapse, this most humble kind of bicycle is the GOAT. They love 'em in North Korea, Cuba and everywhere else where shit really sucks. Every Prepper ought to have one yet they all get 5k high tech carbon fiber marvels of engineering that are almost as complex as a motorcycle and will be useless once something breaks on them. Not smart.
>>
>>520087283
Forgot fenders and head lamp.
Now you can not put fenders on some bycycles without making severe modifications to the frame. Everything made to be useless shit nowadays , only for profit.
>>
>>520087375
When I was a kid I wouldn't even consider one of these bikes, as an adult I don't know what the hell I was thinking.. Fenders, racks, internal gears and hub brakes make the experience so much better. Luckily bikes manufactured during the 40s-60s are still easily found for cheap, and were built so well that you need little more than a wrench, a wire brush and some fresh grease to bring them back to original working order. Most IHG hubs like Sachs and SAs just need flushed with automatic transmission fluid to bring them back alive, rarely even requiring a full teardown.
>>
>>520087899
They still make them for third world markets. Cost next to nothing too. Like 20 bucks or so. But it's like kei trucks, the Toyota trucks for third world armies, tiny Chink EVs perfect for cityfags that even look great since they're styled after 50s euro bubble cars and many, many other things: You just can't get them in the first world. Either there are tarrifs that make what should be the budget option a luxury item or they're outright banned due to not meeting some regulations that are obviously nonsense and designed from the start just to cockblock you. At the same time they refuse to make them here for 150-250 bucks because the profit margin isn't enough for shareholders to have any interest in that kind of thing. Shit is mad gay. Luckily as you said old ones and restoration candidates are still cheap or even sometimes free but the supply will eventually dry up. It happened to cars, trucks, motorcycles and everything else. It'll happen for bicycles too.
>>
>>520087899
>When I was a kid I wouldn't even consider one of these bikes, as an adult I don't know what the hell I was thinking.
So true.

They even put a holes with screws for easy greasing the hubs, so you so not have to take them apart.
They were built with sole purpose to be of good use. Now planned obsolescence and greed has made everything shit.
