Since the goal of the developer is profit and not art or high quality, you get the soulless shitty boxes you see today. The ironic thing is that when prefab homes first started, homes that could be bought from a catalogue, they were beautifully constructed, and the men that built them took pride in their work and used quality wood. But these were homes often bought by the individual homeowner, and they were often the builders too. Those were the stately craftman style homes you still see in older neighborhoods, a stark contrast to nearby modern neighborhoods.
