It occurs when affirmation — the ability to define oneself through creation, value, or presence — has been eroded by fear, shame, or historical exhaustion. What remains is a defensive consciousness that sustains itself only through contrast. It needs an external foil to feel continuity, because internally, it senses only fragmentation. Such a mind externalizes its inner conflict, projecting its unintegrated aspects onto the world and then waging war against them. The enemy becomes a mirror reflecting the parts of the self it cannot bear to face.Over time, this pattern erodes vitality. The self becomes inert, incapable of imagination or renewal, locked in a perpetual dance with its own negations. Its existence depends on friction; without an adversary, it fades into incoherence. It mistakes resistance for substance, survival for purpose, and the noise of conflict for proof of being. The more it denies, the more dependent it becomes on the very forces it claims to reject. In the end, it doesn’t even know what it stands against anymore — only that if the war ever ended, it would die of starvation.
