For the record, the US Govt believes what happened is, after his public trial and sentencing, since there was still no word from the US, NK decided to torture him for a bit and they were going to parade him around on TV again showing him all fucked up (again to show the US they were serious) and play the public sympathy card with the media to get the admin to the table. The US doesn’t believe the orders were to kill him or let him be tortured to death, as that would have been fucking retarded for NK to do to a college kid who, while dumb, didn’t do anything. The assumption is then that, since they were using him as a political pawn piece and told whoever was to torture him to fuck him up a little bit, they didn’t keep any medical staff nearby or at least not close enough to where he was being tortured in the prison. No one knows for sure, obviously, but whoever the official or person was doing the torturing somehow fucked up by either going at him too hard or not knowing fully what they were doing or there was some other unexpected accident during the process, and it took anywhere from 5-20 minutes for NK medical people to get to him and save his life, basically. NK officials, realizing they fucked up, start changing their story and even internally change his designation before they then abruptly stop talking to the Admin about him between 6-8 weeks later. But they apparently kept him heavily monitored and working on him to “bring him back” so to speak for another month or two, as they continued to do brain scans and evaluations after they stopped talking to the Admin about him. They finally gave up and just sorta kept him alive until they thought he was about to die anyway and offer to turn him over.
