Rats and insane rent and shitty, shitty, arrogant ppl.
Rochester was close enough for me (with frequent visits to the big apple) and truly ...ugly.
Expensive. Even there.
And...
Old! Lol.
Everything falling apart. Sidewalks all cracked and crumbling. Buildings old AF and not painted. I dunno, coming from Central Texas I had no idea how run down and OLD the Eastern Megalopolis was.
Etc. And unfounded arrogance like you've never seen.
Now theyre all moving to Portland, OR.
A real shame.
I didn't know where to go next
Between her for 20 years and just can't take it anymore. Always was an outsider due to race realism but now?
I'm not sure "just" skittering away to Umpqua or Florence will do.

>The hustle and bustle of le big apple
the city smells like pee, you imagine Times Square at night with the lights, but there are empty cups on the sidewalk, it stinks like urine because the subway ventilation has homeless piss soaked bums sleeping on them because the heat from the trains wafts up - it fills the street with the stench of warm pee, there are all manner of freaks shambling down the streets.
Its either too crowded, usually by vagrants, or its quite empty and you stand there thinking "this is the center of the world? I look in every direction and see only 15 people, 5 of which are passed out laying up by shop windows" Its a very odd and disquieting feeling like the world ended a long time ago and you werent there to see it.
>Broadyway
You may think of broadway with vast theatre lights, the inside is fine, its like a medium sized highschool gym with a modest stage, the outside looks like its sinking into the city block, as if it hasnt been maintained in a generation.
>The Food
the food is slop, it tastes good but you have to take a taxi to the restaurants or you walk, and its thoroughly uncomfortable to trek through the city on a full stomach.
>the girls out on the town!!!
there are no girls, there are no young women here. I walk the city often and see maybe 10 young people a day, all of them homeless.
>central park
homeless people live there just laying on the grass.
You wouldnt believe it but they literally just lay there, on the grass, all day.
Its also not a "little slice of nature in the big city" it is a handful of trees on green plain the size of a middle class frontlawn with a dirty pond and fountain surrounded by napping bums.
It looks like a refugee camp.

The city is awful, its GDP comes from legal firms and shipping all of which could be moved out of NYC without any functional change and the city would collapse overnight.
The City lives on a reputation from a time that no longer exists.

Same but for Long Island. This is the only area in the country I feel a connection to the land itself. It’s not that I particular like the people there, or am close to anybody. it’s not that get along with anybody there better than anywhere else. I like the food, the architecture, the history. Sure. I’m also very nostalgic for the area due to my youth. But more than anything the land itself is agreeable to me. It’s Feng Shui. East Facing is wealth and prosperity.
>>
>>520987191
A good way to describe New York City is if you asked your grandfather to tell you stories about his childhood, then you imagine this fantastical world based on his stories, but when he actually shows you where he grew up, its like "oh, this is a dump."
New York is the fantasy, but when you live there you realize its just a very shitty stinky overcrowded Favela.
I went to Mexico on Vacation and Mexico City is nicer, more beautiful at night too.
Difficult to explain to someone who has never been to New York how bad it really is.
>>
New York was still fun if you were hyper rich and well connected right up until about 2015, but for everyone else Chicago and Philly have been more fun for basically everyone. After COVID they all suck but Chicago and Philly have slowly supplanted New York as the shittiest of the three. The only advantage to any city at this point is the ultra-high-end of nightlife, restaurants, entertainment, etc. and only New York still has that.

So New York is good if you’re super duper rich. It sucks for everyone else. Every other city sucks for everyone.

I moved there after college in 2017. What disappointed me was not even discovering that it was a dump. It was discovering despite the dirty and smelly streets and tiny old rundown apartments, it was basically the suburbs. Everyone I met was the same sort of boring, sterile, cookie cutter suburban person, the kind of person who has brunch every Saturday, buys Vuori from Nordstrom and wears Patagonia vests over their work uniforms because their peers do, who spend every weeknight watching Netflix and care way too much about this mid bar/restaurant or that mid bar/restaurant. They’re just the lamest people. All that style that New York was famous for was mostly already gone.

The outer counties are the new outer boroughs. Every real New Yorker lives in Westchester now, they got priced out of the city a decade ago. You’ll hear more New York accents on Long Island or in New Jersey than the city itself.
>>
>>520987547
It is a massive pain to participate in any kind of luxury because the cost remains, the traffic remains, and everywhere you go you are bombarded with the constant reminder you live in an open air sewer.
No amount of money, and no one here actually enjoys spending money, can make it smell less bad or make the inconvenience of a 15 minute car-ride literally 100ft down the block to avoid the smell of walking go away.
No amount of money can fix this city.
>>
>>520987599

I grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania and lived in New York after college. I burned out so I moved to Philly, was still burned out, so I moved back to Northeast Pennsylvania. It’s nicer and quieter here but it’s so goddamn boring and unremarkable.

I just can’t help but feel like if you’re young and ambitious you really have no choice but to live in a big city like New York. Not doing so is effectively dropping out professionally, socially, romantically.

>>520988008
Well if you’re social or like your work or money at all then the city is where all the good stuff to do is.

You guys want to imagine that cities are just lonely bugmen eating dinner alone at Barcades, but it’s all professionals networking with likeminded professionals, political mover and shakers working on advancing politics, people dating, bros hanging out, like civilization, like it not, happens in cities. Everything other than outdoor activities is lesser outside the cities and sadly mere outdoor activities don’t make life worth it for most people.
>>
Washington DC is the centre of the world for ((Them))
>>
>>520988301
the us government has a legitimacy crisis, there is no political mover and shaker, they are people ignoring americans and doing whatever the fuck they want.

NYC and LA are just where the normies think the center is. It's really still DC and London. It's the old money vs new money thing sort of thing. The people with real power and wealth don't live in million dollar penthouses. They've got a comparatively small unassuming place that's worth millions regardless becuase of how old it is and the location and history and another in a place you'd never come across out in the country with lots of property as their primary residences and they're filled with antiquities and paintings that would be at home in a museum. The sort of stuff you see pop on the news for selling for tens if not hundreds of millions at auction just casually lying around their houses as decoration. The rich and powerful of NYC and LA are like the mcmasions to the 200+ year old country estates of the real old money who actually pull the strings and weild the most influence.

There’s no actual power around DC, dude. The entire city is just politicians and civil servants who do the bidding of the masters that buy them off, largely from New York, Philly Main Line, Boston, London (less and less), etc. They sell their offices to a decentralized system of money-interests which only dominate whether there’s lots of wealth. Vanguard’s biggest investors have significantly more power than anyone in DC and those people don’t live in DC.
>>
>>520989384
Sort of. The OG old money cities were Boston and Philly. Then Philly became THE big American city so all the money started moving out to the ‘burbs and then New York became THE big American city so they abandoned Philly entirely. New York became a solidly new money city after the gilded age while the old WASPs stayed around Cambridge and Gladwyne. In ranked order, it’s Boston, Philly, Washington, New York.
>>
>>520989475
No where is the same. But I’d bet New York is actually more “old school” even in 2025 than random Florida and Texas suburbs.

Some of what you say is true, but New Yorkers are surprisingly welcoming and nice to me. It took me by surprise, honestly. I’m from the south and have an accent (I never play it up), I’m also highly intelligent and conversant in most subjects. And that’s what I think they care about. I’m not wealthy, nor is there anything about me that people would want to exploit or attach themselves to with the object of gain. I am fairly handsome. And I’m sure that has something to do with the way I’m received in the city. Even so, I truly expected to be treated like shit by those people, but they were always exceedingly gracious to me, if not openly interested in me. To me, it was like New Yorkers are able to size you up in an instant; and if they like what they ascertain from that brief encounter, they express welcome and curiosity. That is to say, they seem interested in the essence of an individual as opposed to a materialistic interest in what they can get out of you — which is the LA vibe. LA and Cali have always been extremely welcoming to me, but that’s mainly just girls. I get hit on so aggressively by Cali girls it always blows my mind. But that’s about it. I didn’t get the sense that Cali people were interested in me — the composite person — just that Cali girls like the way I look. New Yorkers seem interested in me in a holistic sense.
I even strongly considered moving to NY, but I changed my mind because I felt the city was dead…like it lost its soul or something in the wake of Covid.

I was an insider for many years.
The reason is simpler. The obama admin promoted every kind of 'yes man' far beyond their capability. Prior to that, capable people were selected by admins such as the Bush and Clinton admins, but only if they were either sociopaths or such cowards that they would tow the line.
Gutting the military is the obvious, visible example of these control groups diluting and undermining an institution by demanding fealty.
The pendulum swings both ways, in the early 2000's it was the neocons who had to vote as a bloc. Then it was the democrats turn, and they demanded everyone vote along the party line 100%. There was no representation by the left in congress, there were daily talking points and enforcement of 'loyalty pledges' where voting the party line was the only option.

What has destroyed this country are these totalitarian ideas. They work great in small doses, allowing things to get done. But over time, they destroy the institutions they infest.
