>>
>In just 10 months of 2025, mortgage loans were issued for 3 083 billion rubles, which is 27.7% lower than in the same period of 2024.
https://frankrg.com/news/po-itogam-oktyabrya-2025-goda-obem-vydach-kreditov-sostavil-1-062-mlrd-rub

Found myself reading about Russian mortgages again and found this nugget after reading about all the "goodnews mortages are up, rate cuts are working zomg!". I knew something was up and had to dig deeper.
Yes there has been a recent uptick in mortgage issuance. Oct 25 is a bit better than Oct 24. Rates are still 21%+ at market and this is practically unchanged from the same time last year despite the central bank rate having fallen by 4.5% from 21% to 16.5%
https://frankrg.com/news/ipoteka-itogi-sentyabrya-2024-goda

So why the recent uptick? Possibly because of the gov planning cuts to subsidised mortgages (again) in February next year. So Russians are trying to get them now while they can. Government subsidised mortgages used to be 80%+ of issued mortgages throughout the war. Now they're 55%.
The mortgage market is very important for two reasons. One, it's a lot of money. About 20T rubles worth of outstanding debt according to the central bank. Two, it's how a lot of new rubles get sterilised. The money supply has rapidly grown and new money is less likely to become cash, and result in inflation, if it stays in the world of financial instruments like mortgages.

There's no way picrel gets better at these rates. The bank rate went down by 4.5% but mortgage rate is the exact same. No wonder the market has shrunk by 28% over the year.

About 300 employees of a nuclear facility in Russian Ulyanovsk region have gone on a massive strike because they are not paid any salary.

"At the moment, the salary delay has reached two months. Lunches have been canceled, there has been no food provided for a long time. As for transport - we get to work on our own, as best we can," the workers say.

JSC Institute Orgenergostroy is responsible for the construction of a research nuclear facility in Dimitrovgrad based on a multipurpose fast-neutron reactor. At the end of September, Putin called this development "revolutionary," claiming that "95% of spent fuel will be reused multiple times in reactors."

However, Russia prefers to spend its money on war and destruction, not creating something new.

The Russian tsar doesn't give a damn about his people.

This is Maria Khoreva, a talented ballerina who lives in Russian St Petersburg and is the first solo in the ballet of Mariinsky theater (led by Putin's friend Valery Gergiev).

Maria has a lot of fans, 670,000 followers on Instagram, and she has never spoken against the war in Ukraine that is waged by Russia, her country.

She works and pays taxes in Russia.

On November 9 and 10, Maria will take part in a concert program in Liceu theater, Barcelona.
The audience wants to see her perform. She will pay taxes in Russia. Russia will then spend this money on strikes on Ukrainian kindergartens.

Art is never beyond politics. And ethics. It's important to realize that.

Those in Barcelona can join the protests:
▪Sunday, November 9: 4:30-5.30 p.m. (the performance is at 5 p.m.);
▪Monday, November 10, 7:00-8:00 p.m. (the performance is at 7:30 p.m.)

The same thing is happening in Argentina.
I made the English translation for you.

“Do something to get me out of here”: he went to Russia to study and ended up in the war.

Gianni Dante Bettiga, a 23-year-old from Tierra del Fuego, traveled to Russia in February to study the language and ended up on the war front in Donetsk, enlisted in the Russian army after signing a contract.

Persuaded by two classmates, he decided to sign up with a private company that recruits soldiers, which would allow him to earn a monthly salary and obtain a residence permit. Gianni’s only condition was not to be part of the Russian Army.

His father says that “he signed a contract - it was written in Russian - and what was supposed to be for one year ended up being for three. He underwent military training for two weeks near Moscow, and in the third week, they sent him to Donetsk, the Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia.” The parents sent a letter to the Russian Defense Minister requesting his military discharge.

>The same thing is happening in Argentina.

Excerpts from Gianni Bettiga’s letter (from the front in Donetsk):

“I’m on the battlefield. I want to go back to Argentina no matter what. I don’t care about this country anymore. Please, do something to get me out of here. I love you, Dad.”

“I can’t mess around much here because those who want to leave or show little willingness are thrown into the grinder. I can’t wait to get back, but as long as I’m here, I have to stay strong.”

“Dad, I’m not afraid of dying, because it’s just an instant and that’s it, but I am afraid of losing an arm or a leg.”

Statements from Juan Bettiga (Gianni’s father):

“Reading it broke me, it was like a bomb - imagine that - but I have to appear strong, because he has to stay strong.”

“I won’t start my treatment until I know my son is safe.”

“It won’t be easy, because there are no bilateral relations between Russia and Argentina, since President Milei made it clear that he supports Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine. But I’m not going to give up.”

Statements from Carla Zucchi (Gianni’s mother):

“Nothing could be further from military life than my son, who never obeyed an order in his life.”

Andrii Paltsan is a clergyman of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the head of the chaplaincy service of the 15th Army Corps. He is raising five adopted children. In an interview with the media, he shared his story - how he became a father of many and serves as a military chaplain.

“Chaplaincy service is almost no different from parish service. Just like in civilian priesthood, you have to live with your parish, develop your church so that it remains alive. It’s the same in military chaplaincy - the servicemen are my family, my loved ones.”

As the priest shared, when he was a child, he promised himself that if, as an adult, he ever had the chance to give at least one child a family, he would definitely do it. And that’s exactly what happened: he adopted five children, four of whom are biologically related.

“The adoption process took a long time. We traveled through most of Ukraine together with the orphanage, since the children were evacuated from one orphanage to another. I followed them to stay in touch with them. All those - as I like to joke - ‘seven circles of hell’ were worth it when you finally come home, and the kids run toward you with their little hands shouting, ‘Dad’s home!’ You forget the fatigue, all the negativity you’ve gathered. It’s a complete rebirth — you disconnect from everything and find rest, both spiritually and physically.”

French fishermen are sending fishing nets to Ukraine to protect against Russian drones.

Fishermen from the coast of Brittany have created a charitable organization, Kernic Solidarités, to aid Ukraine. They have already sent two shipments of horsehair fishing nets, totaling 280 km in length, according to The Guardian.

These fishing nets serve as anti-drone protection near the front lines.

“They are proud that their used nets will help save lives,” said Jean-Jacques Tangi, former president of the Finistère Fisheries Committee.

Fishermen from Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, and Finland have also been sending nets for some time.

Thank you for supporting Ukraine!

Friends,

In the comments to my post about a Russian ballerina Maria Khoreva performing in Barcelona there are a lot of statements that the ballerina cannot do anything on her own, that her job is art, not fighting against the Kremlin's regime.

In response to these statements, I could have given many examples of other Russian artists who have spoken against Russia's horrible war against Ukraine, left Russia, keep on working and have successful careers in the West.

I could have shared a lot of stories about talented Ukrainian artists who will never again create anything because Russia killed them.

When I say that art is never beyond politics, I mean that art and artists are a part of our world and are a reflection of the events that take place in the world.

The full-scale war is going on for almost four years already. Millions suffered from it, there are tens of thousands of victims, horrible destruction, unbelievable amounts of grief. Double standards (politics to one side, art to the other side) legitimize the Kremlin's military aggression and endorse Russia to continue its expansion into Europe.

I am grateful to everyone who realizes the long-term consequences and works hard to protect Europe.

This was expected, but that doesn’t make it any less painful. Because this place - the Kramatorsk railway station - has long meant much more to all of us than just an important logistical hub. So many sincere tears, hugs, kisses, reunions and farewells, disappointments and moments of happiness, pain and indescribable joy this station has witnessed over the years.” - photographers Vlada and Kostiantyn Liberov

I wonder what Latin America dictators hes referring to anyway. It'd make more sense if Ukraine started the war or wanted it at all. If Zelensky really provoked Russia into a war, Kiev etc would have been defended from the start. It's just nonsense.

I’d like to share with you an excerpt from the book "Hemingway Knows Nothing" by Ukrainian Defender, poet, writer Artur Dron.

Artur Dron is 24 years old and has defended Ukraine for over three years. Recently, he published a collection of essays called "Hemingway Knows Nothing" - his reflections about war, faith, his brothers-in-arms, life and death. This book made a very strong impression on me, so I've subtitled a video of Artur Dron reading one of the essays himself for you. It's a longer one, but I do think it is worth watching.

This essay is called Trench God and in it, Artur reflects on faith during the war.

"It’s easy to blame wars on God - after all, among all of us, He’s the only one who’s almighty. But it wasn’t God who drove tanks into Northern Saltivka in Kharkiv. It wasn’t God who sent a bullet into Tourist’s chest. It wasn’t God who shelled hundreds of churches in eastern Ukraine. It wasn’t God who destroyed Bakhmut and Mariupol.

>I’d like to share with you an excerpt from the book "Hemingway Knows Nothing" by Ukrainian Defender, poet, writer Artur Dron.

People did that. About 143 million of them. Russians. They made the choice to destroy Ukrainians. They crossed Ukraine’s borders with their military equipment. They kill our people and destroy our homes. Every war is started and waged by people. This one - by Russians.

This is not a divine test, not a trial of national maturity, or any of those things people say. It is a crime - against life, against nature, against humanity, against God Himself. The consequence of someone’s choice to kill and steal. War is the opposite of God.

So where is He, when such horrors are happening to us?

With us. Inside the horror. In the buildings of Saltivka. In Tourist. God is in the wounded, the tortured, the raped, the traumatized. In the persecuted, the missing, the imprisoned. In every innocent killed, executed, shot. In the fallen on the battlefield. In all who have made the hardest choice of our time - not to flee, not to hide, not to surrender, not to disappear - but to defend life."

Developers of Russian military game 'Squad 22: ZOV' dispute failure claims despite low player counts on Steam

The developers of "Squad 22: ZOV," a tactical game based on Russia's "special military operation" (SMO) in Ukraine, are pushing back against reports of the project's failure, despite data showing a sharp drop-off in players on the international distribution platform Steam.
The game, created by Russia's SPN Studio, was released on the domestic VK Play platform in late January 2025 before launching on Steam four months later. According to statistics from the third-party site SteamDB, the game's concurrent player count peaked at 50 on May 29, after which it saw a dramatic decline. Recent data shows daily player numbers have often fallen to single digits.
Alexander Tolkach, head of SPN Studio, acknowledged that the "main hype has died down" but rejected the notion of failure. "The game is currently available on various platforms," he told the Russian publication Podyom, listing RuStore, VK Play, and direct downloads as alternatives. He claimed that after Steam "pushed the game into the shadows" by removing it from recommendations and restricting access in some countries, players migrated to other platforms.
Tolkach stated that "nearly a hundred thousand players worldwide have played the game," which he described as "quite good" for a "niche and hardcore tactical project with a controversial story." He added that a "global update" for the game is currently in development.
The game, which depicts Russian forces in missions like the assault on Mariupol, was created with input from the Russian Ministry of Defence's Main Military-Political Directorate. Tolkach asserted that the project successfully "delivered its narratives" and sparked international discussion better than anticipated.

FRESH NEWS FROM POKROVSK:

Stoltenberg recalls 'painful' call, says NATO rejected no-fly zone to avoid World War III

Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has recounted a "painful" and desperate plea from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the first hours of Russia's full-scale invasion, revealing he rejected the request to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to prevent a direct war with Russia.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Stoltenberg described receiving a call in February 2022 from Zelenskyy, who was in a bunker in Kyiv with Russian tanks closing in on the capital. "He said: 'I accept you're not sending in NATO ground troops, though I disagree. But please close the airspace. Prevent the Russian planes, drones and helicopters from flying and attacking us,'" Stoltenberg recalled.
The former NATO chief explained that enforcing a no-fly zone would have been a massive escalation, requiring the alliance to first destroy Russian air defense systems located inside Belarus and Russia itself. "And if there is a Russian plane or helicopter in the air, we have to shoot it down, and then we are in a full war between NATO and Russia," Stoltenberg said he told the Ukrainian leader.
He emphasised that the alliance's objective was to support Ukraine without triggering a catastrophic, wider conflict. "We're not willing to do that. As [Joe] Biden, who was US president at the time, put it, we will not risk a third world war for Ukraine," Stoltenberg stated, quoting the U.S. president's position.
Stoltenberg, whose recollections are also detailed in his memoir "On My Watch," admitted the decision was incredibly difficult and that he feared the call might be his last conversation with Zelenskyy, whose life was in grave danger. "Our goal is not to have a Pearl Harbor and find ourselves in a situation where the entire alliance is involved," he added, reaffirming the strategy of arming Ukraine to defend itself without direct NATO military involvement.

Russia arrests nearly a dozen people for alleged links to Ukrainian intelligence

Russian authorities have arrested a group of nearly ten people, including Russian and foreign nationals, on charges of participating in a "terrorist community" allegedly collaborating with Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
A source familiar with the investigation told the agency that the suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention. The detainees are reportedly being held in Moscow detention centers, including the high-security Lefortovo prison, which is often used in espionage and treason cases.
The specific activities the group is accused of have not been disclosed. According to the source, an unnamed foreign citizen is considered a key figure in the case, who investigators believe established the connection with the SBU. The case also involves other individuals who have not yet been identified by the authorities.

Russian Passenger Transport Market Shrinks 12% as Small Operators Exit

Russia’s passenger transport market has seen a significant consolidation over the past three years, with the total number of operators shrinking by 12.42% as smaller players are pushed out by stricter regulations and tougher market conditions.
According to a study by the analytics firm "Kontur.Focus," the number of companies and individual entrepreneurs providing urban and intercity transport services fell from 7,043 to 6,168 between November 2022 and November 2025. The urban bus segment experienced the sharpest decline, losing 775 operators, a drop of nearly 14%. The trend also affected electric transport, with a 7.84% reduction in tram operators and a 6.52% fall in trolleybus companies.
Analysts attribute the contraction to a government push for higher standards in the sector. "In recent years, government policy has tightened requirements for safety, fleet renewal, and financial transparency," said Veronika Skorokhodova, an analyst at Kontur.Focus. She noted that while established players can access state-supported leasing and subsidy programs, these new standards act as a barrier for smaller companies.
This market shift is creating a dual reality for passengers. In major cities, the consolidation is leading to a higher quality of service as larger, more stable companies with modern fleets take over. However, the exit of smaller operators is creating a deficit on less profitable intercity routes, potentially reducing transport accessibility in some regions. The market is increasingly dominated by larger corporations, with the share of individual entrepreneurs in urban transport declining as the share of commercial legal entities grows.

Drone attack causes fire, power cuts in Russia's Voronezh

A fire broke out at a municipal facility, and power was temporarily cut to parts of the Russian city of Voronezh following an overnight Ukrainian drone attack, the regional governor said.
Governor Alexander Gusev stated that Russian air defence and electronic warfare units suppressed "several" unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the city. One of the drones hit a municipal infrastructure object, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished by emergency services. No casualties were reported.
As a precaution due to the fire, authorities temporarily suspended electricity and heating services in some areas, leading to fluctuations in central heating for some residences. Gusev confirmed that all utilities had been fully restored.
The attack also caused minor damage to a construction enterprise, where a roof was hit, windows were broken, and several vehicles were damaged.

Expert outlines EU visa landscape for Russian tourists amid new restrictions

Several EU member states had already halted the issuance of tourist visas to Russian citizens prior to the European Commission's recent decision to suspend multi-entry Schengen visas, an academic has noted.
Roman Gareev, an associate professor at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, identified a group of countries that have effectively closed their borders to Russian tourists. "Countries that have suspended the issuance of tourist visas include Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands," Gareev stated. He added that entry to these countries is often restricted even for those holding valid Schengen visas issued by other states.
The tightening of visa rules has been a gradual process since 2022, but the latest move by the European Commission on November 7, 2025, formalizes a significant restriction by requiring Russians to apply for a new single-entry visa for every planned trip to the EU. The Commission cited increased security risks as the reason for the change.
Despite the widespread restrictions, Gareev pointed out that several popular destinations remain accessible. "Among the countries loyal to tourists, he named Greece, Italy, France, and Hungary," the report continued. These nations continue to process tourist visa applications from Russia, although applicants may face longer processing times and increased scrutiny.

Ukraine says Russian strikes targeted nuclear plant power lines, calls for IAEA meeting

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that a massive Russian aerial assault overnight on Nov. 8 deliberately targeted high-voltage substations that supply the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants, calling the attacks "well-planned" acts of "nuclear blackmail."
"Russia is deliberately endangering nuclear safety in Europe," Sybiha wrote on the social media platform X, urging an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to address the "unacceptable risks." He also called on global powers, including China and India, to demand that Russia cease its "reckless attacks on nuclear energy" infrastructure.
The strikes were part of a large-scale attack involving over 450 drones and 45 missiles that targeted energy facilities across Ukraine, causing widespread power outages.
Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk confirmed the assault was one of the largest direct ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure to date. Speaking on national television, she also reported that the attack marked the seventh time Russian forces had struck the country's gas infrastructure.
