We live in a world that our brains are not biologically adapted to live in at all. In the past before easy access to birth control and abortion, wanting to have sex was enough to get people to breed. There were also a lot more economic incentives to reproduce since people were reliant on their kids to take care of them in their old age and work on farms. So in a nutshell, people in the past didn't necessarily need an innate desire for kids in and of themselves to have kids. None of that is the case now.
