Here in the Land of Mordor, October 2014

“Perhaps our destiny is to meet a grim end before the Gate of Mordor, and if so, your final hour will have come too, whether here or wherever the black tide may engulf you. Farewell!” J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, Book V, Chapter X, “The Black Gate Opens”

For nearly sixty years, millions of readers worldwide have been able to enjoy John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's (1892-1973) masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings (the first edition dates back to 1954-1955), either condensed into a single book or divided into three (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King), according to the narrative subdivisions intrinsic to the story. And even more numerous have been the viewers across the globe who have been able to experience Tolkien's saga through the three films (which repeat the aforementioned tripartite structure) directed and co-written by the New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). Therefore, very few readers of this book will be unaware of what the Land of Mordor is, one of the most significant locations in the fantastical geography described by Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings. For those who are unfamiliar with the symbolism of the brilliant British writer, we can nevertheless cite an effective definition that appeared at the time on the web, on Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia: “Mordor (Dark Land; from mor “dark” and (n)dor “country, land”) […] Land of darkness and terror, inhabited mainly by orcs and other evil creatures…”.

Well, as the first decade of the 21st century drew to a close, and the year 2014 was well underway, for many inhabitants of this tiny ball spinning in space called Earth, despite the impressive scientific and technological developments that seem to grant ever-increasing power to the human species, the feeling was that of being—always and in every case—in the infernal land of Mordor. Let's understand this: since the dawn of civilization and for millennia, before the extraordinary events that have ushered in modernity and contemporary times, at the head of the priestly and aristocratic castes, composed relatively of a privileged few, the majority of the human population lived their (generally brief) lives in conditions that were usually horrific and unhappy. Amid incurable diseases, plagues, wars, genocides, social injustices, de jure or de facto slavery, racial or religious persecution, and abject material living conditions, the peoples of the Earth have known, fundamentally, a difficult and/or hellish existence. With occasional glimmers of light amidst so much darkness. Like someone born today in a remote African village (or in other equally isolated places on the planet) who sees how horror, misery, disease, and death prevail over any other destiny, even amidst such hardship, contemporary human beings—and those of any era—always find the necessary strength to have hope, to love, to act, to fight, to create, and to believe they can attain a measure of happiness. Then, perhaps, before he has obtained what he hoped for, a vicious death comes to him, by means of a machete, a firearm, or an illness that the lack of medicine cannot cure.

And yet, from the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia to the flourishing of ancient Egypt, from the millennia-old Eastern cultures of China and the Indus Valley to the dazzling developments of the ancient and late Western world (Greek city-states, Hellenistic kingdoms, the Roman Empire), from the centuries of the Middle Ages (Christian expansion in the West and Islamic expansion in the Middle and Far East) to the cultural, scientific, and political revolutions of the Renaissance and the Modern Age—including the discovery of the American continent and its native civilizations—humankind has built, created, imagined, destroyed, and regenerated monuments and works of great beauty, the fruit of its material ingenuity and its diverse intellectual and spiritual talents. Works in stone, wood, parchment, paper, fabric, and any other available material. Artistic and historical memories from ancient and contemporary times, preserved and passed on to posterity with tenacity and optimism. Humankind, cast upon the face of the Earth in conditions of extreme poverty at the dawn of time, despite the sad existing condition of most of its members, has managed to make this planet its most proud conquest.

Man has become the sovereign of nature, capable of altering and perfecting its laws through the combined work of "hands and intellect," as Giordano Bruno, cornerstone and tutelary deity of modern Masonic tradition, liked to repeat. Lights and shadows. But, precisely for that reason, even under the same precarious natural condition of being a creature subject to illness, death, and psychophysical instabilities, some (kings, military and priestly aristocracies, writers, artists, artisans, philosophers, scientists, and those who cultivated the liberal arts) have lived, throughout the centuries, lives more dignified than those of thousands of anonymous slaves (in those times and in those societies where slavery was flourishing even if only formally), of the countless serfs of every legal status, of the endless legions of peasants from every geographical latitude, always recognizable by their broken backs, calloused hands, faces burned by the sun or cracked by the cold, and systematic illiteracy. As for the working-class condition, a consequence of the Industrial Revolution, it's best to draw a veil over it: before the belated conquest of trade union rights and workers' statutes, how many children, teenagers, women, and men (recently urbanized in unwelcoming metropolitan districts) faced lives battered and broken by poverty, destitution, and physical and psychological exploitation at the hands of those who treated them like beasts of burden?

Thus, when humanity reached the end of the second millennium, and then the beginning of the third, as both spectator and heir to more than three centuries of uninterrupted political, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological revolutions—revolutions that, in a relatively short time, completely transformed the social and environmental landscape not only of the West, but of the entire globe—someone thought that an indefinite phase of stability and serenity had finally been achieved, capable of guaranteeing minimum conditions of existential happiness and social protection for every individual born on planet Earth from then on. And all this, leaving behind the old class conflicts and the old utopian and totalitarian demands for radical palingenesis. Even better: considering the uncompromising critique of the political and social system (liberal democracy) inaugurated between the 19th and 20th centuries exhausted, and having survived two "hot" wars (1914-1918 and 1939-1945) and one "cold" war (the term/concept of "cold war" was introduced in 1945 by the Freemason George Orwell and by the Freemasons Bernard Baruch and Walter Lippmann in 1947, also referring to the two previous years, and is commonly considered to have ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989), the idea of a kind of "end of history" and its socioeconomic and political upheavals gained traction. Officially, an unprecedented stabilization of historical dynamics was being foreshadowed. But it was a misguided prediction.

Above all, it was a prefiguration that failed to account for certain substantial sociopolitical, economic, cultural, and ideological processes, active since ancient times, but which became especially virulent and dramatic from the 1920s and 30s onward, with an initial epilogue that was tragic and terrible at first and, therefore, seemingly healing and pacifying during the following 1940s. And it is precisely here that the narrative of this book begins, leading us to the events of 2014, while the two subsequent installments that complete it (plus those of *Global Power and Its Venerable Masters*) will have the characteristic of moving forward and backward in time to draw attention, for the reader's benefit, to the main plots of power dynamics in the modern and contemporary age.

CHAPTER 1 The Final Solution (1941-1942-1948) Where the complicity between the neo-aristocratic Masonic establishment, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy is recounted; the violent reaction of the Nazi leaders upon seeing their support for the Masonic movement falter after the outbreak of World War II; and the new era inaugurated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Masonic support for Nazism and Fascism

After 1939, and even more so after 1941, Nazi Germany and its satellites could count on only a very small fraction of the powerful support they had long enjoyed from the elitist, conservative, and reactionary Masonic establishment of the Euro-Atlantic area.7 Both Hitler and Mussolini, moreover, declared Freemasonry illegal, but Mussolini turned his Grand Council of Fascism into a kind of State Grand Lodge, placing an overwhelming majority of Freemasons both within its ranks and in the highest institutional positions (with the Freemason Beneduce chosen as director of the entire Fascist economy). While Hitler, at the same time as he entrusted Alfred Rosenberg, Reinhard Heydrich, Martin Bormann, and Hermann Göring with the mission of dismantling, both ideologically and practically, the activities of ordinary German lodges (those with a liberal and democratic orientation)—an objective that was implemented and completed from February 28, 1933, to July 30, 1935—, he was flanked by the Freemason Hjalmar Schacht, as the great puppeteer of the entire German economic, financial, and industrial system. Göring himself cultivated, from the 1920s onward, important relationships with several German financiers and industrialists who were Freemasons affiliated with cosmopolitan and supranational Ur-Lodges. In fact, those neo-aristocratic Freemasons who had favored the rise to power of both the Italian fascists and the German Nazis did not want a world war, and even less so a conflict involving the United States against Nazi Germany.

What they would have desired was the proliferation of fascist regimes in Italy, Germany, and other European countries, hoping that a similar oligarchic and elitist regression in governance could spread throughout the West, including the United States. Following this line of thought, they were even willing to favor the expansion of the Third Reich at the expense of other smaller neighboring nations or a portion of the vast territory of the USSR (which would also have satisfied the colossal war industry, largely controlled by these supranational Masonic networks), but always trying to avoid a direct confrontation with the other major Western powers, with France, but above all, with the United Kingdom. A respite from the Monaco Agreements, which saw the heads of the English and French governments (respectively, the conservative Freemason Neville Chamberlain and the progressive but irresolute Freemason Édouard Daladier) accept the conditions/impositions of Hitler and Mussolini "in order to safeguard peace and avoid the outbreak of armed conflict in the heart of Europe," was generously offered in that same year, 1938, precisely by the Grand Lodges of England through the drafting and dissemination, in European political circles, of certain passages from Aims and Relationships of the Craft, where paragraph 7 stated, incredibly, that:

Consistently, the Grand Lodge has always refused to express its own opinion on matters of domestic or foreign policy, whether national or abroad, and will never allow its name to be associated with any initiative, however humanitarian, that violates its unwavering policy of remaining neutral in any matter concerning relations between governments, political parties, or ideas contrary to government policy. This was a programmatic declaration intended to withdraw Masonic support for any British (and not only British) policy that strongly opposed either the imperialist aggression of Nazi Germany toward some of the neighboring nations or the shameful anti-Semitic racial persecutions that had been carried out for years by the Third Reich, and which had culminated in the pogroms of the terrible Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) on November 9-10, 1938.

Churchill and Roosevelt against the Nazi-fascist Frankenstein

At the same time, however, a prominent conservative and pro-fascist Freemason, Winston Churchill, had already definitively positioned himself against the "self-serving pacifism" of Brother Chamberlain's government and against the moderate, hypocritically superior, and falsely apolitical positions of the British Masonic communions. Churchill—elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom that same May 10—would be forced to offer Franklin Delano Roosevelt—leader of the progressive Euro-Atlantic Freemasons—the collaboration of those sectors of moderate and conservative British and European Freemasonry that were no longer willing to continue supporting under any circumstances the imperialist, bloodthirsty, and warmongering drift of the Nazi-fascists. Here, from this fusion between progressive Freemasons guided by the charismatic figure of the President of the United States and moderate-conservative Freemasons grouped around the no less resolute Churchill, a signal was born for the reaction against the "Nazi-fascist Frankenstein" (created in vitro decades earlier by clumsy apprentice sorcerers in aprons). Here, too, was born the prospect of a "final solution" for the existing world orders, one that should be more firmly democratic and libertarian than the one that emerged after the end of the First World War (from 1919 onward). On the other side, that of a Third Reich increasingly committed to a bloody and titanic involution, inspired by a rabidly anti-Masonic magical-esoteric matrix and now completely devoid of effective Masonic antibodies, the terrible and inhuman vision of a very different final solution is unleashed.

Revenge against the Pluto-Jewish-Masonic traitors.

We wish to emphasize that the Nazi project of total extermination of the Jews cannot be explained in any way through interpretive categories of a practical or rational nature. There was no utility or rationality of a material nature in the extermination of a powerful, semi-enslaved workforce (millions of Jews), whose usefulness and low cost for companies operating on German soil or in territories under Nazi occupation had been demonstrated, and continued to be demonstrated. But every historical act responds to a certain form of rationality, and the refuge in simplistic hypotheses that attribute it to the supposed madness of Hitler and Heinrich Himmler's SS seems to us neither correct from a historiographical point of view, nor sound from an anthropological perspective.

On the one hand, Hitler and his followers, in the years 1939-1942, felt betrayed by those elitist and neo-aristocratic Anglo-American Masonic circles that had supported them in their rise and consolidation of power, but which, firstly, had failed to prevent the war, first against the United Kingdom and then against the United States, and secondly, in some cases had withdrawn their support in horror at the escalating violence and indiscriminate and often gratuitous brutality of the Nazi Third Reich. It was, therefore, a matter of punishing those same circles, sometimes indeed of more or less distant Hebrew ancestry and sometimes not, but which in any case were symbolically grouped together (or were susceptible to being grouped together) by the propagandistic curse against the demo-pluto-Judaic-Masonry, enemies of the Nazi-fascists. By interning Jews in camps or murdering them, a message of revenge and defiance was being sent to Western liberal democracies (Great Britain and the United States first and foremost), in which Jews—with the same status as other ethnicities, in a context of interethnic pluralism—held important positions in the economy, finance, culture, and art.

The esoteric aspect of the final solution

On the other hand, Hitler and the esoteric and ideological elites of Nazism, in particular, believed that a "human sacrifice of gigantic proportions" would release immense spiritual and psychic energies, all of them for the benefit of the "sacrificers." This was, therefore, a conviction whose origin could be traced back to very ancient magical-sapiential doctrines, reworked and appropriated by some of the main Nazi leaders. In this way, moreover—that is, through a total and pervasive bloodbath to the detriment of the Jews—what had already been theorized in Mein Kampf [My Struggle] could be realized and brought to fruition, simply by inverting the terms. In that work, Hitler wrote that “even if hundreds of model states were found on Earth, should the Aryan, the bearer of civilization, be consumed, no culture would survive that could match the spiritual level of the current superior peoples,” and he expressed his recognition, his conviction, that the strength of the Jews lay precisely in the purity of their race and their bloodline. As recorded in the Wannsee Protocol, with the decision to carry out a bloody final solution to the Jewish question, exterminating this hated and feared ethnic group, the German dictator believed he was conferring upon the Aryan race dominion over the planet, which he believed had been usurped by the Hebrew race. The matter is undoubtedly very complex and will be addressed in greater depth in due course.

Ariosophy and Theosophy

In a recent book by Pierluigi Tombetti, the author seems to approach significantly what, in our view, was the deepest meaning of the Holocaust for the intentions of the Nazi elites, starting with the figure of Heinrich Himmler, supreme leader of the secret cult of the Black Order. In Tombetti's opinion, the esoteric doctrines that fascinated Hitler's men were rooted in Theosophy, an intellectual movement of Theosophical origin. Therefore, the Nazi reaction, which should have violently attacked international Masonic circles, some of which were of Jewish descent, had its starting point, in turn, in another ideology of Masonic origin. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891), the founder of the Theosophical Society (officially established in New York in 1875), who would become, in some ways, its most media-savvy figure, was only able to powerfully disseminate her unprecedented, semi-Masonic social creation thanks to certain Theosophical circles connected to both ordinary lodges and supranational Ur-Lodges. Blavatsky herself underwent a hasty initiation "by proxy," thanks to Giuseppe Garibaldi, in the Ur-Lodge "Thomas Paine." Later, however, she was expelled. But this is a story we will tell elsewhere, when we delve into the subsequent affiliation of this fascinating esotericist and godmother of modern Theosophical doctrines with the Ur-Lodge "Parsifal."

These Latomistic circles entrusted some of the founding members with the implementation, growth, and worldwide dissemination of the Theosophical Society. Among the most famous and influential members—who would later become part of the various national sections and the international hierarchy of the Theosophical Society, after numerous affiliations, schisms, reorganizations, and diatribes—were Freemasons, both men and women, as well as individuals with esoteric interests who had not undergone Latomistic initiation.

Progressive Freemasons against Nazi-fascist ideology

But it was not esotericism in general, nor specifically Nazi esotericism, that prevailed at the end of the Second World War. What triumphed, after a horrific and devastating conflict, was the strange alliance between the progressive Freemasons of Brother Franklin Roosevelt and the moderate Freemasons of Winston Churchill. Churchill, in fact, had to recant and overcome his past sympathies toward Mussolini and the oligarchic, black-shirted Freemasons who had accompanied him from 1919 to 1922. From 1936 to 1938, then, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, who in 1927 had paid an official visit to Mussolini to legitimize his dictatorial regime internationally, embarked on a path as a fierce opponent of Nazi-fascist barbarism. In essence, two centuries later, the fusion of Masonic circles with different worldviews was repeated in the face of a common enemy. In the mid-18th century, the enemy was the Ancien Régime; in the years between 1939 and 1945, it was Nazi-fascist ideology and practice, both based on a spirituality that was not only anti-democratic and freedom-crushing, but also on an unusually ferocious racism.

Therefore, Masonic esotericism—in its progressive version—prevailed, founded on a spirituality of an egalitarian, liberal, libertarian, and democratic nature. And this progressive Masonic esotericism would still have the opportunity to serve as inspiration for a “final solution” for world governance after the war, which would see in the recently constituted (October 24, 1945) United Nations the nucleus of a more just, peaceful, free, and democratic world. Likewise, Masonic circles in all latitudes supported and flanked the American brethren who, under the leadership of Freemason Eleanor Roosevelt (initiated in October 1928 at the Ur-Lodge “Thomas Paine”), promoted the drafting and then the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (signed in Paris on December 10, 1948, under the auspices of the UN). The document was generally inspired by the American and French revolutionaries/constitutionalists of the late 18th century, as well as by the libertarian and democratic legal and constitutional heritage that had been developing throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries; but its inspiration can also clearly be traced to the famous speech against the Nazi-fascist dictatorships that Roosevelt delivered to the United States Congress on January 6, 1941, regarding the "four fundamental freedoms: freedom of speech and expression; freedom of worship; freedom from want; freedom from fear."

The Freemason Mohandas Gandhi

The Freemason Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948), known as the Mahatma (the "Great Soul"), had several Freemason experiences, the most significant of which were undoubtedly his affiliation with the Ur-Lodge "Thomas Paine" (1894) and later the creation of the Ur-Lodge "Arjuna-Phoenix" (1904), which operated over the years primarily in India, Africa, and the Western world. The extraordinary experiences of the Freemason Gandhi's life began in the last decades of the 19th century, intensified during his time in South Africa from 1893 to 1914, and culminated in the violent struggles for Indian independence during the three decades from 1915 to 1947. Gandhi's spiritual, philosophical, and meta-religious perspective makes him one of the most important exponents of progressive Freemasonry of all time, whose worldview would influence several key figures of the second half of the 20th century, most notably another Freemason, Martin Luther King Jr., a champion of the civil and political rights movements for minorities. Well, the Mahatma was shot dead on January 30 of that same year—1948—, during which, at the UN, the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which we discussed earlier, was a tribute precisely to individuals of his temperament, and to his dream of a freer, more equal, and fraternal world, bound by a chain of solidarity, compassion, and social justice.

The Freemason Gandhi, after a life lived in the spirit of Voltaire, fighting for the rights of others, barely survived the titanic struggle against the governments of Pakistan and India. Through a hunger strike that endangered his life, he demanded that they: a) end all violent and armed conflict between factions of Muslims and Hindus; b) successfully complete the agreed-upon payment of enormous sums to Pakistan (550 million rupees as compensation, within the framework of the partition of the territories of the Indian continent); and c) guarantee legal equality and absolute tolerance toward the followers of all religions under their political sovereignty. The Mahatma thus won yet another non-violent battle against the Indian and Pakistani governments, which accepted all his proposals. Unfortunately, it was a victory he paid for with his life, when he was assassinated by the Hindu fundamentalist Nathuram Godse. But we will discuss Gandhi's exceptional life, marked by Masonic vicissitudes, in much greater detail at another time, in the following installments of Freemasons. We have briefly mentioned him in this chapter because his life and death were, and still are, a testament to the possibility of a final solution for coexistence among ethnicities, races, religions, and social groups—a solution identical to that professed by Eleanor Roosevelt and her brothers and sisters, and radically antithetical to that disseminated by Nazi barbarism and by fundamentalist propaganda of any era.

CHAPTER 2 Conservatism from East to West (1950-1956) Wherein is recounted the reactionary and conservative revival after the end of the Second World War, and the extent of progressive resistance throughout the 1950s.

The reactionary and conservative revival

The 1950s were marked by the first manifestation of conservative and reactionary political impulses, fueled by a series of significant international events. The escalating political and ideological tensions between the Soviet and American blocs, led respectively by the renegade Freemason Stalin and the avowed Freemason Harry Truman, led Freemasons George Orwell (as early as 1945), Walter Lippmann, and Bernard Baruch (in 1947) to introduce the apt term "Cold War" into international debate, defining the state of perpetual latent conflict between the two new superpowers (the United States and the USSR) and their respective allies and satellites. In 1948, the infamous Berlin Blockade imposed by the USSR ushered in a period of further strained diplomatic relations between the victors of World War II. On May 23, 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was unilaterally established with Bonn as its capital. On October 7, the German Democratic Republic was proclaimed with East Berlin as its capital. The borders between the two Germanies, in Berlin, were officially closed in 1952, and in 1961 the East Germans erected the infamous Berlin Wall.

It is striking, by the way, that while the coat of arms of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) revived the ancient Teutonic symbol of the single-headed eagle on a gold-yellow background (whereas, with the German Masonic revolution of 1848, the Frankfurt Parliament adopted the double-headed eagle, the classic emblem of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, which had previously been adopted, with other meanings, by the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire since the 15th century)—also skillful in its allusion to subtle alchemical-Masonic resonances—the coat of arms of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), clearly printed on the flag of the East Germans, represented a creative fusion between an element of evident communist origin and blatantly Freemason symbols. Indeed, the coat of arms was composed as follows: a hammer (a typical communist instrument, along with the sickle) overlaid with a compass and a square…

The Freemasons Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin

It was precisely in that ambiguous and fertile melting pot that was the GDR that figures of great renown today, such as Angela Merkel (born in 1954) and Vladimir Putin (born in 1952), underwent Masonic initiation (in the late 1980s) in the same supranational Ur-Lodge that was co-opting and recruiting members with guaranteed futures in the East and West German territories. The super-lodge in which Merkel and Putin were initiated was initially called "Golden Eurasia," but from 1967 onward it changed its name to "Speculum Orientalis Occidentalisque," significantly symbolizing an anti-Soviet alliance with the Ur-Lodge "Lux ad Orientem," founded that same year by the Freemason Zbigniew Brzezinski. Recently, being a more active Ur-Lodge than ever before (the tragic pantomimes of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict being one of its most demanding fields of action), it has become customary to officially refer to it by the two names by which it was known in its past. The Western-Eastern European tensions found an additional official sanction with the establishment of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), a military alliance promoted by the United States and the major Western democratic powers with their allies and satellites, in force since 1949. On the side of the other superpower, the USSR and the Eastern European states subject to its hegemony, the Warsaw Pact was established in 1955.

It is also necessary to point out here that the official NATO flag features another esoteric symbol, the eight-pointed compass rose (stylized in a design where each point is divided into a white and a colored part, alluding to the Masonic floor of black and white tiles), while the Warsaw Pact emblem shows not only the reiteration of the five-pointed star motif (a symbol that communist tradition has taken directly from Freemasonry, more specifically from the second degree, that of Fellow Craft: and in fact, socialists and communists wanted to call each other "fellow crafters"), but even a stylization of a certain type of Masonic handshake: in this case, it is not one of the typical greetings of the first three degrees, but a variant especially popular in some Ur-Lodges active in Central and Eastern Europe and Central and Southern Asia.
