People confuse communism and socialism. Socialism is where the government controls the means of production, communism is the mythical fairyland where the workers do. Socialism is supposed to be the gateway to communism, but communism is impossible and socialism is destructive on a massive scale.The core problems with socialism are two fold. One, the government is hilariously inefficient at economic planning. Inefficiency causes shortages, whether that manifests in unaffordable prices or total lack (ie famine) depends on how far into socialism the system has gone. The world food supply simply cannot handle an additional 5% inefficiency without starving millions, and Socialism leads to WAY more than 5%.The second is that centralized planning necessitates centralized power, which necessitates holding power at all cost which further leads to the extreme abuse of power.No matter how bad you may think the current corporations are at controlling the economy, the government is always worse. It's simply too bloated and too distant from the effects of its own choices. Our current situation of "late stage capitalism" where the corporations more or less control the government for their own advantage is itself just a weaker socialism (because it involves government controlling the means of production to some extent even if the government is itself controlled). It's still bad, but it's bad BECAUSE of the socialist aspect. Pushing for more socialism is only a way to make it even worse.
