Actually, there was research that showed that given enough movement a granular solid cargo like iron ore can suddenly behave like a liquid. So being overloaded and tossed around in a storm the Fitzgerald found her holds loaded with a liquid all of a sudden capsizing the boat. Hold baffles would have helped.
