It's a shame what people have done to the image of psychology as a discipline. It's not all mushy gushy therapy nonsense, you know. The more hard science branches of psychology like perception, neuroscience, cognition and psychophysics (which is arguably just a method to quantify perception and cognitive activity, but let's not get into that) are genuinely interesting, but the field as a whole gets a bad name because of therapy being the aspect of psychology that most people are familiar with. It's a shame, really. If any anons want to get a better idea of what psychology can actually be, I highly recommend Gustav Fechner's Elements of Psychophysics or any textbook related to perception. Pattern recognition is particularly interesting, but my personal area of interest is perception of pain. Look up Dr. Melzack's gate control theory, it's really cool and explains a lot about how we process painful stimuli. There's a lot more to psychology than you have most likely been exposed to.

i had a health scare some years back during college. Passed out randomly, came to find i was just super dehydrated from working in the yard midsummer. but my brain just couldnt wrap around that fact and i thought i was dying.therapy (more specifically CBT*) did actually help. but it wasnt talk therapy like the shit women mention. i had a hardcore therapist, the one in a million type that respected that i didnt just wanna go on a ton of meds. she instead forced me to go do uncomfortable things, like sitting in public, going places i cant immediately leave like church or study hall, and would actively bombard me with negative thoughts about how im not breathing right, or my heart is slowing down, or im getting pale or whatever. it was like weightlifting for the mind, and shoot fixed my shit up ASAP. I went to two other psychs before this one and they both wanted me on AT MINIMUM 3 different drugs. ridiculous. *CBT = cognitive behavioral therapy, not cock and ball torture. AMA btw.
