I fully believed Catholicism was the Truth, that the early church was Catholic and that were was an unbroken chain between early church tradition and what we know today as Catholicism. Why do we need the sacraments to have a personal relationship with Christ?Then there's the influencer grift. The rise of conservative American influencers converting to Catholicism in the past decade coincides with the rise of MAGA as the main political force on the American right. Trump is closer to a European rightist than an American rightist. His ideology is closer to that of Viktor Orban or Marine Le Pen than Ronald Reagan. Trump is a big government populist, not a small government free markets guy. Catholicism very much goes along with this since it's an authoritarian collectivist religion. Everyone has to obey the pope who serves as an ideological dictator. Catholicism is in essence European and rooted in European culture. This is the polar opposite of America. We are individualists at heart. We believe in the power of individuals to have good moral conscience and solve problems ourselves. Free markets are the clearest expression of this. Evangelical Christianity is the most American faith there is since it's entirely based on a personal RELATIONSHIP with Jesus not empty traditions. When I look at most American Catholic convert influencers all I see are Americans LARPing as old Europeans. They talk endlessly about saving "western civilization" but nothing of American patriotism or saving American culture. Likewise the Orthodox claim to fame is being the churches Paul founded and those they e established since but all of those things are earthly boasts. The Bible has many stories but an overarching trend is God exalting a man to lead his people with his Word and then that person or the next generation of people falling astray and doing wrong in the sight of the LORD leading to punishment until someone realizes how far astray theyve been lead and leads them back onto the path. There's no reason why that couldn't be the case for Protestantism and even now that most of those churches are falling astray. What's most needed is for all of us to read the Word of God so that we know the truth and so that the wicked can't make things up to shake our faith or lead us astray. Hardly a week and sometimes not even a day goes by that I don't see someone lying about what's in the Bible and what God would want us to do, and if you don't read the Bible you may not be able to recognize these lies for what they are, either.
