Apartments suggest to me (and are demonstatably) magnets for immigrants, crime, lowering standards of living and increasing costs. I’m fine with an apartment here and there sure, but trying to house an entire city in apartments is dystopian and a signal of cultural and economic failure.

I saw beavers a few months back when I was biking at 5am, I see all kinds of birds and animals all the time along the way though. You can have a dense city, right next to nature. Americans spend 2x as much time online than europeans on average, and a large part of that is that 85%+ of Americans live in suburbs. Even if an American lives in a "city", it's actually just a massive suburb with like 10 big buildings in the middle. For social development it hurts a lot. Studies show people who live in suburbs know 3x less of their neighbors than people who live in apartments.
