So long as the serial killer does not commit the murder on camera an investigation that begins weeks or even months after the fact is going to struggle to piece together the evidence, unless the murder happens on the camera or the victim is taken at gun point on camera.Police are sloppy. Add months of time between the kill and the investigation and it is more likely they wont pick it up.
The reality is that if the serial killer is average intelligence and opportunistic than you are fucked. Badly fucked. The type of killer that will see you broken down off the highway and kill you right there then dispose of your body. A homicide investigation may not begin for months and thats if it does at all. By then evidence has been contaminated and may not even matter if he didnt leave any.An opportunistic killer like that is extremely difficult to find.

Now take a job where you are constantly moving around the country, then be intelligent enough not to leave a pattern (only blondes etc) and it just adds layers to the complexity.
