I’ll go first>visit grandfather at family farm in rural kentucky a few times every year>there’s a locked door in the back of the house that we are never allowed to open>nobody ever opens it or says what it is>years go by with this curiosity of the unknown >go off to college >come back to grandfathers farm for first time in 3 years one winter break>grandfather and I stay up late drinking together for first time ever>he leans over from his chair and while smiling in a way that I’ve never seen before, he whispers “wanna see what that door leads to?”>instant excitement >goes and takes a key from under lamp that hasn’t moved in 20 years that I know of, and unlocks door>excitement immediately changes to fear>it’s a closet that’s empty with a hole dug through the floor and a wooden ladder that leads down.>he sees that I’m freaking out and says I have to go down and pull the chain light to see what’s down there.>it’s pitch black but say fuck it and climb down>it’s at least 15 feet down till feet hit the floor>pull chain and lights come on >it’s a fucking concrete bunker>gun walls, food storage, well water pipe, dampered air vents, bunk beds, propane generator, first aid rack, you name it he’s got it.>he hobbles down and tells me one day he was watching the news During the Cold War and just went to the closet and started digging.>dug for 3 years while pouring concrete himself >found out later that grandma nearly divorced him during the 3 years because he would come home every night and just dig in silence >mfw I just imagine my grandfather telling his wife to shut the hell up while tunneling under their house for 3 straight years.
