Because admitting that something you trust[ed] might be untrustworthy does two things:1) Imposes on you a responsibility to critically evaluate it as potentially unreliable going forward, which is a chore2) Requires you to confront the fact that not only may you have been fooled (which makes you feel stupid and angry), but depending on how deeply you've internalized these compromised sources your entire worldview or even identity might be based on bullshit and nonsense. This is typically a traumatic thing to have happen to people, so they'll take great pains to avoid it
