On top of that, we foolishly cut a bunch of programs that actually saved us money because DOGE didn't understand than an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure. Sometimes you spend money trying to make sure that something doesn't happen because otherwise it costs you way more money to deal with it when it does. For example, states are no longer getting flood and tornado warnings because we took down the government weather service that monitored those conditions and sent out alerts, meaning that our natural disaster response has gone to shit and more damage is being allowed to happen instead of taking preventative measures.
