Why aren't mental asylums common anymore? Why is mental healthcare put behind a $200/hr paywall and mentally ill people are just left to fend for themselves? Most homeless people are just mentally ill people self-treating with illegal drugs. Mental asylums would eradicate a large percentage of homelessness, stop drug profits, lower crime and be a more cost effective measure than increased policing budgets, insurance costs, treatment centers, etc provided through tax payer money.Why am I paying like half of my income in total taxation towards a society where I can walk to work and see a bunch of people passively committing suicide on the streets? What kind of society is that?

In the US it is very difficult to have someone involuntarily committed. You can't force them to do a lot, and the number of times given for the "no this time we are serious, you have to come in and take your meds, or else" is very high. You can't round up someone who is drunk and high and throw them in until you decide they are over their addiction is also a not allowed. You want to solve problems, lower the bar to involuntary commitment. But then you will need more asylums, and this means warehousing people which is also bad. So the idea which is allowed to spoken apparently is giving every one therapy and a social worker and throw money into that void forever.
