because Ukraine doesn't have to worry about starving civillians or running out of money. Imagine how much longer WW1 could have lasted if Germany had a magic portal in Berlin where they got money and weapons coming in, and any civillian that wanted to get out could do so and be taken care of in safety. No morale crushing stuff like soldiers thinking about starving wife and kids back home, revolutions, having to melt down pots and pans to make bullets, workers and officials not getting paid etc. All the state does it concentrate on putting men in uniform and sending them to the front until they run out. Its a totally unprecedented supply chain situation. They even get electricity from europe and until recently there was a fucking gas pipeline from russia going through Ukraine to europe because they still had a contract to get a percentage. It's not like the Russians have it all already and there is just a tryhard rebel resistance (kinda like us in Iraq) - they never even got that far in the first place. The one time to make the "ok it's over, they should try to just find the least painful way to a settlement" was the first couple weeks after the invasion where they were surrounding Kyiv with giant convoys and it seems like only a matter of days until the battle for the capital started. Well it fucking never did. They fucking pulled out. Ukraine fights because it had the time to figure out strats, if it got overwhelmed as intended it would have been over. Historically long drawn out wars favor defense. You cannot give them years and years to figure out what to do to maximally bog you down because they will do just that. I recall distinctly Putin was offered several off ramps in March-April 22, there were attempts to just strike some kind of deal to get a ceasefire. He didn't take them. He went and cooked himself instead of reading the history he claims to know so well on what happens in a war like this. Ukraine doesn't have to reconquer a fucking inch back to win, they just need to wait until the Russians get fed up and retreat. It could take years, but it works. We lost in Vietnam and Afghanistan that way. Hell the USSR lost Afghanistan that way. Dunno why people are coping pretending this will end any different.

Its one thing to be holding defensive positions and mowing down attacking troops, its another to have little guided missiles flying around kilometers into your rear so you cant even reinforce the front. Thats why they're being slowly pushed back, they're not giving up these positions willingly, which means troops are being killed and wounded and are harder and harder to replace
