Despite all the wars and destruction, most countries in Europe are littered with castles. Yet hardly any in the Netherlands. Did they have more in the past but the merchant-loving country ended up destroying them for some reason. A jew ruling class that was too much of a cheapskate to live in castles?

N.Brabant used to be part of the old Duchy of Brabant and riddled with castles like the other parts of the Duchy. Likewise for Limburg, as you can see in Maastricht. Lots were built before the 16th century when the proddies and jews were pushed North. My guess, they let merchants tear them down and sell on the expensive building materials, others simply weren't maintained and fell in disrepair because it was too costly and they cheaped out.

Another reason for the relative lack of castles could be that we simply had less war than France and Germany. We didn''t have a lot of city states or small fiefdoms that went to war with eachother.It was only in the era of the Burgundians, around 1400 AD that the region started becming strategically important.
