FDR:s main objective was not to defeat Japan or Germany. It was to absorb the British empire into an American one instead. That's what US foreign policy going back to the McKinley administration was all about. The objective was finally met in the 1940s at Bretton Woods, in Tehran and at Yalta. One could say it was already sealed under Wilson during WWI with the Balfour declaration as leverage. At least that's what really set the stage for British reliance on/cucking to Washington and American encroachment upon continental Europe as well. It was all finalized under FDR, Truman and Eisenhower though.
