>Do Americans really have awkward political conversations at Thanksgiving?

They really do. Lots of family fights are created and grudges nurtured.

You think that’s bad?? Try being a short fat kid in the locker room during shower time. All you wanna do is win the game. Win the girl. Pass the exam. It’s a rite of passage I reckon.

You gather a bunch of family members around a table for an hour or more, politics are bound to be brought up

No, none of my family are left leaning. Dropping a Nigger usually gets a laugh.

We never had a bunch of extended family come over for Thanksgiving and everyone in my immediate family was sane, so I've never experienced that.

Not my family.
1/3 likes Trump
1/3 hates Trump
1/3 knows politics is nothing but a soap opera.
And we all know that it's not worth spoiling a good time bickering about politics.
Generally, when we chat at gatherings it's in phases
First, the scoop on how everyone's doing
Second, the scoop on what everyone has coming up in their lives
Third, crack jokes and act like goofs.

I've gone to dinners with friends who have big families, Christmas dinner with close to 50 people. Boomers sit at their own table playing cards, somebody talks politics and everyone ignores it. If anything it's worse with a small family, I can't ignore my aunt talking about Trump when I'm the only one there.

shitskin in picture

I've never once had Thanksgiving with my family. They're a bunch of faggots though so whatever.

Awkward conversations? Yes. Political conversations? Also, yes. Awkward political conversations? Generally no. Most people already know the political leanings of their family members. So it's very easy to curate your conversations to be agreeable to whoever is currently present.

It's an over blown meme. When Americans make a joke about something, they joke so much they force meme it into reality and forget actual reality.
