During covid when everyone else was not working I was busting my ass keeping the shelves full at the store being paid a thankless 12 an hour. Recently took some time off and moved and instead of the hiring manager thanking me for my service during covid I get a disgusted look for a small gap in employment and no call back. What is with 300 pound hiring managers that couldn’t do the job themselves not hiring someone who can?
15+ year NEET veteran here, a few summers ago i helped a friend with a random cash job, working for some company at a nursing home that flooded, we got along fine and had a productive day and at some point the guy asked what we normally did for work, my buddy told him what he usually does (machinist) and i just said i havent had a job in years. he didnt say anything but later i found out from my friend that he was absolutely disgusted by what i said and didnt even want to pay us apparently all because he was mad at me. talk about wagie ragie

HR here. The reason we avoid people with gaps in their resume or people who are able to NEET is because they can easily quit the job at short notice unlike people servicing a mortgage. They can push boundaries like not showing up or taking unpaid sick days, and the escalating possibility of firing with cause isnt a threat to them because they have already demonstrated they can live intermittently or long term without income.
