Why did English people try to sound more German and less American after WW2?
>>522630076I blame the BBC.
>>522630076That's west country accent, it's more like pirate speak than American
>>522630076Have you been struck on the head by lightning recently?
>>522630076Australians used to speak like the queen, what the fuck happened?
>>522630205This map shows the sentiment of the English people, after WW2 they tried to avoid sounding American and dropped the R like Germans do.
>>522630259>Australians used to speak like the queen>RØG FLØD MEG FLYD
>>522630076How are you going to pronounce Arm without an R? Am? Germans pronounce Arm with a soft R.
>>522630530>aamlike that
>>522630139that's all you ever think about.
>>522630186it's great my family is from Taunton and the SW was a fun place to visit for the accent aloneI want to go back to Cornwall so badly
>>522630076i grew up in the UK and had relatives in cornwall. never remember anyone not pronouncing the R in arm. that would come out as 'am'. i dont remember that.
>>522630635sounds irish
>>522630683True. The BBC has a long and wide experience in the UK. However for the last few decades it hasn't been able to satisfy the native population as much as its reputation may suggest.
>>5226303147/10 demented granny tier
>>522630795I think it' more about a Hard R
>>522630076because it sounds better
>>522630076the word is "ahm", not "arrrrrrrrrm".learn2english, faggots.
>>522630957>Hard R
Arms! Arms for the poor!
>>522630957its always about the hard R. but yes, i know what you mean now ive thought about it for more than 3 seconds. even with the long 'a' aaam i still hear an R sounds in there.
>>522630259that honestly looks like the queen in that pic
>>522630076Hanging R is a symptom of American culture terror.Thankfully i conduct interviews for our company and reject people that cannot pronounce properly.(We have 0 blacks, 0 Chinese, 0 Indians, 1 Pole, the rest are proper engleesh lads.
>>522630139Elaborate.
>>522630076Because sounding German is überbäsed
>>522632839
>>522630076In German whe pronounce the R, faggot, the word even is the same, and even if you pronounce the R in English (which you should) it's far more subtle. It's not ARRm (like in German) or Ahm, which sounds gay. Just Arm.>"to arms!">"two arms".
>>522630265It's really because television and radio standardised how to pronounce certain words from the london standard
>>522630076You have to choose between the "t" and the "r".Brits say "watah"Americans say "wadder"
>>522633126löl
>>522631413>1 Poledoes he >take his dok for a walk and listen to >Ay-ron Maiden?
>>522633316some us even say 'wor-tah'
Fun fact. I win the geography trivia 100% of the time. It took me 3 guesses as to what that map r.epresents. Thats because even in a trivial sense, that place is totally irrelevant.
>>522634563No way a real person wrote this.
>>522634563took you 3 guesses?
>>522630076funny you said that because my german dad always pronounces english words like a brit, like he doesn't say the r in "jar". I thought it was from growing up in british controlled part of germany post ww2 but now this headline confuses me. but i mean germans never pronounced the r hard, like the r in jahr for year. whatever. i guess since the irish are really strong with the r's, maybe the brits did copy germans this whole time
>>522630076Non-rhotic dialects sound fucking gay.
>>522630076The UK used to have more widespread and stronger regional accents, that has faded with time with accents becoming more homogenised. This isn't particularly unique to the UK.
>>522635053older generations mainly talked to people around their area and family, now everyone's connected with the internet and hearing people from all over speak. and becoming more homogenized. I'm hearing less retarded regional accents here as well
>>522630815Irish use hard Rs. >>522630186Cornish accents are particular offenders.>>522635053Yes, upper middle London accents have taken over. If you listen to faithful reconstructions of Elizabethan accents they sound more Cornish. People actually mistake them for Irish accents sometimes, Cornish included.
>>522634771>>522635530uvular r in munster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhLdKJnY194&t=171s
>>522635530northern irish then
>>522630815More like Bostonian or New York accent.
>>522632667Not that kike and it wasn't just the BBC, but I think they're talking about "Received Pronunciation." There was a similar phenomenon in Hollywood with the "Transatlantic" accent. Basically, the BBC had all its presenters speak with a non-regional accent. RP accent now is different to what it used to be. Also known as "The Queen's English."
>>522635637We use both here. Part of what makes spoken Danish so difficult for foreigners to master.
>>522633316Thank you for acknowledging this people think I'm crazy when I use that exact example to show that people don't use t'sLike you sound like an asshole if u say "wa-ter" with a real clear t
>>522630076Penzance is so lame. British people are so lame. Not even good pirates.
