And just like Chinese, Japanese (also Vietnamese), these languages are basically alien & unrelated to any European language at all, thus more study time to be fluent. For average comparison, a native English user on average needs around two years to be proficient in Japanese while it takes less than a year to fluent in Dutch or GermanSecond, Schooling in East Asia doesn't really invest much in foreign language, practically not much time to teach them in mandatory school.Third, the reason those exams are very difficult is because enrolling at prestigious national universities is extremely competitive (basically, not perfect score = fail). Single enrollment place at the toppest college is competed by tens of thousands of applicants. Thus, exams are made harder & harder to only filter the best based on the grades alone (which i disagree). Ironically, enrolling at universities abroad is much less dreadfully competitive and could pass it easily if they met the language requirement
