Iran too. Iran's transmitter is shitty though. But anyway they are probably gearing up for an Internet cutoff and this will be their primary method for broadcasting their views. China of course, dominates the entire shortwave spectrum with several channels always coming in strong in every region on the planet. English, French, Spanish, Tagalog, Japanese, Korean, even Finnish.BBC, DW, RFI, even the Romanians are ready. US is too. Japanese also maintain the very highest quality and fidelity short wave programming on earth, with a proper radio in a target area it's as good as local AM assuming a competent receiver. It's quite something.I guess the point of all of this, is that it's finally time to take the advice I've been giving you for a decade or more, and buy a short wave radio. One that runs on batteries, that can take an external antenna, that does SSB, and ideally, has AM sync. You might not have much time. The best of these are only available used, or cost thousands of dollars now. I'll advise you on what to buy if you give me your budget. Software defined radio is an option but beware - it's kinda shitty for various technical reasons, in the cheaper implementation.
A good antenna located away from your home or anybody else's is great for your signal, it doesn't take a super turbo expensive radio to get a good signal out in the woods, even with the built in antenna. If you live in an apartment block there are specific ways to even cope with that but for a modest investment (active local noise pickup + phase cancellation box, it's like $200).But if you have a yard just stick an antenna in the yard, it can just be a wire on your fence line or between some trees or bushes. It's a million times better than having it indoors where all the noise is. And run a shielded feed line to it, boom.
>>523657260I got this but I don't really know how to use it.
I don't really understand what the point of having one is if it's just foreign propaganda, OP?
i have a baofeng. it's laying on the floor under a desk where it fell like 2 years ago.
>>523657494That's unfortunate.>>523657864It's not. As a ham the main "function" we will have is interoperation, passing messages on behalf of what used to be post and telegraph and telegram and datagram services, and etc.But a side effect is that, we will also be able to hear news from all corners of the globe, places like France and Germany, as well as our vital close partner and lover China and even the dreaded Russians.
>>523657260Perfect! Right when we stop broadcasting propaganda through RadioFreeEurope and other such gov’t subsidized SW stations, Russia and DPRK fill the void. BumpReceivers are cheap, might as well.
>>523657864At the end of the day, even privately owned stations wind up being unwitting proprietors of propaganda, it’s just the nature of the beast at this point. Hell, marketing at large could be said to be tailored propaganda. News wise, the best you can do is collect information from as many sources as possible, then read between the lines. Preparedness wise, it’s good practice, establishing operational-level familiarity with your equipment and its capabilities, especially for mobile/portable operations. One can participate in regular “nets” for testing the local emergency preparedness system, or just participate in chatter wherever you may find it, if you wish. DX competitions can be fun, too, and less personal in nature, though Morse code is a must(you should have learned years ago anyhow).
>>523657864With just a shortwave receiver you can get NIST (atomic time sync, if internet sync dies you can listen to this and get pinpoint accurate time) and NOAA radiofax (regional weather maps, you'll need a smartphone/tablet, anything that uses apps, to record the squawking and translate that into pictures on the screen) and listen to govt/civilian emergency broadcasts as well as random shitposters if your receiver can do SSBAlso AM/FM stations and NOAA All Hazards (weather radio, no maps, just a robot telling you about conditions in your area) but you can do that with a basic bitch emergency radioThere's also uhhhh probably some other cool stuff you can do with SW but I'm not a HAM autist and my knowledge is limitedhttps://swling.com/blog/2023/01/balazs-spots-radios-in-the-last-of-us/
>>523657494Supposedly a really good radio. >>523658026I have a couple with my local repeaters programmed ready for Z day.
>>523658498You can also do time-arrival from time-locked airport beacons for a poor man's GPS even if GPS goes down.
>>523658156It actually is entirely feasible and quite affordable (even through usual means rather than attracting a huge following of viewers) to purchase a controllable high-altitude weather balloon to attach an xmitter to, controllable via satellite IP connection or even easier through encrypted HF. This has long been a dream of mine, for transmitting radio/tv feeds into DPRK, but I’d like to see the the technology for indefinite solar-powered loitering flight advance a little further before I step in to actually try to do it.
>>523657864One day you wake up and there is no power, no internet, no cell service, no cable, no landline, and local radio stations are quickly running out of generator fuel. How will you determine if this is a local problem that will blow over soon or something much larger?Starlink maybe but it is a big unknown as the entire system is dependent on one company and if our government tells them to suspend service obviously they will comply.
>>523658771I don't know why is this is so important, just use the moon and bounce your signals off that with whatever encryption you wish. If the beam is tight enough who would even know? It's the poor man's telecoms beacon.

>>523657260>>523657494Dont need it, I train messenger birds for fun, we run competitions the best one I have went for 1200 kms and successfully reached its final destination.
>>523658858Requires far more specialized receiving equipment and protocols. The idea being to transmit on frequencies using protocols that are already in place, so that people don’t even need to modify their sets for more spectrum coverage. Just tune in with their usual dial and listen. At some point, higher RF power will be needed though, as the norks will surely try to block out the signal.
>>523658907I have used a number of rigs, my first HF rig when I got licensed was an FT-450, which is still a great radio. Then I also got an FT-817, which I sold then I got an FT-818 again later. IN the mean while I got a KX3 and then the matching tuner, 100w amp, and the 2m module too. And the matching panadapter. You can plug in a USB keyboard and it will decode cw and rtty and etc. and you can send in all these modes just by typing.I also got a HackRF and other radios along the way, a Clansman set, Biennephone, etc. All kinds of things.>>523659002I have an HP "1g/2g" test set, which I can use to create a phone network for 1g and 2g phones (up to 16) and connect directly to the POTS. The only issue is getting phones that can be rebanded to the ham 900 MHz band, and there are a couple DOZEN. So at this point I have my own cellular network over amateur radio in my area of "coastal oregon" but the tx power is only 5w, compared to the 40w of a normal cell tower. So I can only go a few miles away. But I live on a hill so that helps! But I never use this. It was just an experiment.

>>523659223Epic, I’d love to get a hold of one of those(care to ship anon?), for now I have quite a setup that I’ve acquired near free for RF and electronic work. An HP signal generator being my crown jewel, along with a nice logic analyzer/scope, and an Agilent LCR meter. I’d step up the power a bit and see if a cease and desist letter comes in. If not, let it be. 25W to start.

>>523659467Anon, think about the intended recipient, who has only whatever bullshit radio and tv as made available to them from their leaders. Computer being a necessity is untenable.
>>523661004That's fancier than my setup, I have a couple Tek scopes and my HP has a specroscope, but I don't have really any logic stuff.I am more of a radio amateur who got inot electronics to support my hobby than an electronics person who got into radio.>>523661175People have done SSTV off the moon. It's just fun.
>>523658718What is even better is downloading an android emulator package, installing an open map software package, and then cloning all of your regional satellite data with street name and other information. You can then export this onto microsd cards and turn any cell phone into an instant navigation tool. The gps won't work but if you have a compass and satellite imagery, its pretty easy to find your way around. Right now this involves a massive amount of private effort and only a few people in the world probably have it set up. But as a turn key prepper software package which can be shared with others some cracked version that allows bulk layer data to be downloaded without a licence would be worth its weight in gold the second the grid went down. A major government control factor is the ownership of maps and navigation information. Make that available laterally with .apk exports and you kick an entire leg out from the tyranny information prison.
>>523661056>Water, like from a toilet?I can’t believe we have to mandate AM radio in US cars because some fat cat penny pincher thought it would be a good idea to just get rid of what they were drowning out with electrical interference, despite it being the literal backbone of our emergency communications network(including on many interstates for traffic advisories).

>>523661327Actually the AM stations get a kick back from the car companies, lol. The general public mostly doesn't give a shit. Here's my question - why don't cars have weather radio receivers? We pay for a nation wide network of LOCAL low power, local weather stations to blare out computer voice weather updated to the last 15 minutes, nation wide. At all times. They even have a standard tone they can play as an alert. Why don't all car radios have this? Just hit the 'weather' button and it auto tunes to the strongest, ie most local, weather radio station and gives you up to the minute weather? We literally pay for this system. It works even in extremely remote areas. But... no car has ever had this radio capability.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOAA_Weather_Radio
>>523661213I’m trying to picture a nork with a satellite dish pointed to a very narrow band of their horizon with the “military level” equipment required. I doubt citizens have access to even SSB technology let alone SSTV. I’m an electronics guy who got into CRT repair and radios when I stumbled on a 1950’s transmitter-receiver. I found my way to vintage computers through an Apple IIc for $10 in 2005, which helped me understand the modern systems to a much more in depth degree. Even my 1985 40-channel logic analyzer is 100% compatible with the bus speeds and comms protocols used today.
>>523661544I used to love the fact he broadcast from his trailer
>>523661639All you need is a telescope mount capable of tracking the moon, the original Meade Autostar could do it 40 years ago. Most hams use that, a yagi being even lighter than the big scopes they are typically used with.
>>523661599Excellent question. I receive it on my VHF radio and there are some UHF rebroadcasts as well, but indeed it is some bullshit. >>523662352I agree. The benefit to the memory card map system is that you can clone them as often as you want and then put them into any device (desktops to tablets) and instantly extract an entire country's satellite imagery. This is beyond priceless to have on hand and offers an extremely valuable bartering chip since everyone loves sat maps. You can do this yourself right now but it takes forever.1. Download android emulator2. Download offline maps apk3. Install and allocate minimum 100gb for map data4. Labouriously download each zoom layer in tiny fractions of the overall map. This will take you several months with it just running in the background while you use your computer5. Manually confirm all layers are present in including street names overview6. Export entire directory to microsd card7. Include separate apk extractor app so people can swap emulator data8. Test it on various devices9. Make a few dozen and give them to your friends so they can use sat maps even if they are forced to faraday cage their devices10. ....>Or some enterprising software guy could turn the above into a single click software package and then air drop the files everywhere people who are worried about getting vanned live so they can figure out how to escape without bringing a literal tracking beacon with them. Realistically how can draft gangs be avoided if you need to use government maps to avoid them?
