As more and more AI generated garbage bloats up social media, more and more people might be tempted to leave it altogether. Students could also be prohibited from using computers and made to take all their tests exclusively writing with their own pen without any form of internet access, only books.

Others around me are dialing back too, but for other reasons, and of varying amounts. Can't speak for everyone though. I recently started thinking of what the "next internet" would look like as well, though I'm curious if we even need the public internet at all. I don't think humanity, on some level, can actually handle it mentally. Shown to be with how things are now. Best I can think of is that the internet should be purely infrastructural tech (hospital communication, banking, emergency services, etc). Nothing more.

Well, public internet was great in the 2000s, because all you had were static websites with pure information, and slow forums when you knew you were talking to white men. No infinite scrolling, no mass generated videos, no shorts, no zoomer subtitles word per word. And most importantly you needed a PC to access it, which was on a desktop in your home. The internet was a place in your home and when you left the computer you left it all behind. Smartphones made it infinitely worse.It's basically how Kaczynski theorized it, when some new technology shows up it initially is welcomed as making your life better, then you realize the price you have to pay for it. More roads and more cars made transportation better until you realize you have to be stuck in traffic for 30 mins to even get your food because all the grocery shops in walking distance closed.
