I believe China India Nigeria et al have been explicitly lying about population figures for decades.China's policy of killing all the female babies compounded the issue. If you had 3 women for every 2 men, all 3 women could get pregnant. If you have 2 women for every 3 men, there is a wasted man. Furthermore, China's cultural policy of women demanding men have good jobs and real estate and cash before getting married becomes more difficult when they are proportionally more men competing for limited resources. There are small farm towns with 50 dirt poor 40 year old bachelors who have no hope of ever getting married because they lack resources, and the limited number of women can marry up into the cities (remember that you can't move freely in China, you are tied to your city of birth, so it's worth it for women to "marry up" into a big city).Now China kept up the lies over the decades because regional governments were incentivized to lie about the number of births in order to receive certain benefits and allowances. But now the enrollment figures at the schools aren't lining up with the birth records at all. Lying to save face is a tragic aspect of Chinese/CCP society that has killed millions of people over the decades, with situations like local bureaucrats lying about how much excess food they could donate to the central government leaving people to starve. They were disincentivized from telling the truth.
